Full Job Description
What Your Job Will Be Like

The Component, Science, Engineering, and Production (CSEP) Information Systems and Operational Technology Solutions Department (Org. 7577) is seeking an early-career full-stack developer to join a collaborative team delivering Information Technology (IT), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and Cyber Assurance solutions that support Sandia's discrete manufacturing and lot-based production centers. As Sandia advances its digital transformation and Industry 4.0 objectives, this role is ideal for candidates who either (1) have experience building applications for manufacturing environments or (2) bring strong, transferable software development skills and a desire to grow expertise in complex manufacturing systems.

This position is well-suited for an enterprising developer who enjoys solving diverse, high-impact problems and advancing smart factory capabilities by implementing, integrating, upgrading, optimizing, and extending both custom and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software, especially within the Production Lifecycle Management (PLM) ecosystem (e.g. PDM, ERP, and MES).

On any given day, you may:
  • Design, develop, deploy, and support full-stack applications using Java and/or .Net
  • Partner with teams across the department and the CIO organization to deliver IIOT/OT and PLM software solutions
  • Actively contribute to the implementation and sustainment of Solumina MES software, including development of interfaces, extensions, and customizations
  • Develop and/or research methods to perform data/system integration and interfaces between the organization's Oracle ERP, MES, and Smart Manufacturing COTS and custom applications
  • Participate in digital engineering/digital thread initiatives
  • Perform operational support for computing and software needs across a variety of manufacturing equipment and environments.
  • Explore and apply AI-enabled approaches to enhance both individual and department productivity and effectiveness.
  • Install and maintain COTS software
  • Support governance and stewardship of operational and machine data (including time-series sensor data, image, and video)
  • Partner with cybersecurity professionals to deliver secure, compliant solutions using a graded, risk-based approach
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with manufacturing engineering customers and CIO partners, internal and external to Sandia

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$102,400 - $199,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D S&E Computer Science candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
  • Graduate degree in Computer Science or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Demonstrated software development skills and familiarity with modern software development practices and tools (e.g., Agile).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and a passion to improve and expand technical skills.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
  • Two (2) or more years of recent, hands-on full-stack software development experience (custom and/or COTS) in medium-to-large organizations, including sustainment and user support
  • Proficiency in software development, with an emphasis on Java and .NET
  • Experience developing front-end applications using modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., Angular, React, or Vue.js)
  • Proficiency with one or more scripting language (e.g. Bash, JavaScript, PowerShell, or Python)
  • Database design and development experience (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL).
  • Familiarity with Agile software development practices
  • Working knowledge of DevOps practices and tooling (e.g., Git, CI/CD pipeline development and management)
  • Interest in developing deep expertise in manufacturing software and processes (PLM/MES/ERP)
  • Experience supporting discrete and/or process manufacturing operations
  • Networking fundamentals and troubleshooting experience
  • Experience with cloud/hosted infrastructure and identity technologies (e.g., AWS or Azure authentication/authorization), and modern deployment platforms (Kubernetes, containers)
  • Experience administering or developing on Windows and Linux/Unix systems
  • Experience with IIoT integration protocols/technologies (e.g., OPC UA, MQTT)
  • Experience working in or supporting Operational Technology (OT) environments
  • Familiarity with Sandia corporate IT organizations and processes

About Sandia National Laboratories

The Sandia National Laboratories is one of three National Nuclear Security Administration research and development laboratories in the United States, managed and operated privately by the National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia. Their primary mission is to develop, engineer, and test the non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons and high technology. Headquartered on Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, it also has a campus in Livermore, California, next to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and a test facility in Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii. It is Sandia's mission to maintain the reliability and surety of nuclear weapon systems, conduct research and development in arms control and nonproliferation technologies, and investigate methods for the disposal of the United States' nuclear weapons program's hazardous waste. Other missions include research and development in energy and environmental programs, as well as the surety of critical national infrastructures. In addition, Sandia is home to a wide variety of research including computational biology, mathematics, materials science, alternative energy, psychology, MEMS, and cognitive science initiatives. Sandia formerly hosted ASCI Red, one of the world's fastest supercomputers until its decommission in 2006, and now hosts ASCI Red Storm, originally known as Thor's Hammer. Sandia is also home to the Z Machine. The Z Machine is the largest X-ray generator in the world and is designed to test materials in conditions of extreme temperature and pressure. It is operated by Sandia National Laboratories to gather data to aid in computer modeling of nuclear weapons. In December 2016, it was announced that National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, under the direction of Honeywell International, would take over the management of Sandia National Laboratories starting on May 1, 2017. Educational opportunities are conducted in collaboration with university students through several programs, including the Securing Top Academic Research & Talent at Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program and the Sandia University Partnerships Network.
