Full Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Quality Manager to oversee quality assurance and control processes in our lithium-ion battery development and prototyping facility. Reporting to the Executive Director (Paul Malliband), the successful candidate will ensure that our battery materials, manufacturing techniques, and final products meet industry standards, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications. This position is based in Johnson City, New York, four miles from Binghamton University. Further details of the planned facility can be found at newenergynewyork.com. Key Responsibilities: • Develop, implement, and maintain quality management systems (QMS) aligned with ISO 9001 and industry-specific standards (e.g., ISO 14001, IATF 16949). • Lead quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) initiatives for battery materials, cell assembly, and prototyping. • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action planning for non-conformances, defects, and process deviations. • Establish and monitor key quality metrics, including yield rates, defect rates, and performance testing results. • Collaborate with R&D, engineering, and production teams to ensure consistency and reliability in battery development. • Develop and oversee inspection protocols, in-line defect detection, and laboratory testing procedures. • Maintain compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., UL, IEC, UN/DOT testing requirements for battery transportation). • Manage supplier quality audits and incoming material verification processes. • Drive continuous improvement initiatives using methodologies like Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, and Statistical Process Control (SPC). • Train and mentor team members on quality standards, problem-solving techniques, and compliance protocols. Requirements: • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Quality Management, or a related field with 3+ years' experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. • Minimum 5+ years of experience in quality management within battery manufacturing, electronics, or related industries. • Expertise in ISO standards, statistical analysis, and process optimization. • Strong problem-solving abilities and experience with failure analysis techniques. • Familiarity with battery testing methodologies, including electrochemical performance assessments. • Effective leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills. • Proficiency in quality management software and data analysis tools. • Willingness to travel as required. Preferred: • Knowledge of battery production processes, equipment, and systems (electrode, cell assembly, FA&T). • Six Sigma Black Belt certification with practical experience applying the methodology within a business/manufacturing environment. • Knowledge of battery chemistries (LFP, NMC811) and their impact on quality control. • Proficient with applicable software and tools, such as MATLAB, CAD, and P&IDs.
