JOB SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE
The Quality Engineer 2 is responsible for driving product quality and reliability initiatives for SureScan's Detect 1000 and SureFlow baggage screening solutions. This role serves as a key technical resource supporting failure analysis, manufacturing process improvement, and product quality performance.
Working closely with Engineering, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing, the Quality Engineer 2 helps ensure that products meet performance, reliability, and customer expectations throughout the product lifecycle. This position offers the opportunity to work on highly specialized X-ray technology while leading continuous improvement efforts that directly impact product quality and operational success.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Product Quality & Reliability:
- Monitor quality performance of X-ray tubes, X-ray tube assemblies, high-voltage cables, and related products
- Investigate product and process failures through structured root cause analysis
- Perform inspections, testing, teardown evaluations, and failure analysis on returned field products
- Design and support experiments intended to improve product performance, reliability, and manufacturability
- Track quality trends and recommend corrective and preventive actions
Manufacturing & Process Improvement
- Evaluate manufacturing processes and identify opportunities for quality, efficiency, and reliability improvements
- Assess manufacturability of new and existing product designs
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation to ensure quality requirements are clearly defined
- Recommend design and process improvements to reduce risk, improve quality, and lower production costs
- Participate in Material Review Board (MRB) activities and disposition decisions
Engineering Support & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Engineering, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and external partners to support product development and production activities
- Assist with engineering change implementation and design release activities
- Support procurement and supplier quotation activities by preparing technical documentation and specification packages
- Analyze technical data, manufacturing requirements, and supplier capabilities to support informed decision-making
- Participate in design reviews, supplier reviews, and quality improvement initiatives
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Strong understanding of quality engineering principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Knowledge of root cause analysis techniques and corrective action processes.
- Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, technical specifications, and engineering documentation.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes and quality control systems.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across functional teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Physics, or a related technical field
Preferred:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience conducting root cause investigations and failure analysis.
- Familiarity with supplier quality systems and supplier audits.
- Experience working with GD&T and engineering drawings.
- Familiarity with CAD systems and technical document management systems.
- Experience with high-voltage systems, X-ray technology, or other highly regulated technical products.
PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- This position primarily operated in an office, laboratory, and manufacturing environment. Duties may require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, and computer use. The employee may occasionally lift or move materials weighing up to 50 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. The employee may occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical equipment and X-ray-related manufacturing processes. Noise levels are generally moderate.
