The Operations Manager position in the Public Works Department has recently become available due to a promotion. The Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining over 300 miles of roadways; over 6,000 storm drainage structures, 92 miles of storm drainage piping, 27 athletic fields and 100 acres of turf area at town facilities, parks and playgrounds. In this role, you will report to the Director of Public Works who reports to the Town Manager. You will work in a team environment that includes Public Works department staff including crew leaders, maintainers, asset manager and administrative assistants; and town-wide divisional teams. The starting salary range is $106,000 to $120,000 depending on qualifications and experience.

Your typical work activities may include:
  • Planning, coordinating and supervising the construction, maintenance and repair of town streets, drainage systems, sidewalks, parks and grounds and related infrastructure
  • Assuring effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities and time
  • Oversight of fleet and equipment management and procurement
  • Serving as a critical resource for the oversight and management of the Town's winter storm and emergency operations
  • Effective communication with Public Works and other town staff, vendors, residents and outside agencies

Requirements include:
  • Knowledge of the materials, equipment, methods and practices related to public infrastructure construction and maintenance
  • Knowledge of traffic safety, occupational hazards and safety precautions related to public works
  • Management skills and capabilities to be effective at leading a public works team
  • Ability to work cooperatively with the public, subordinates, co-workers, department heads, union officials, vendors, and town officials, among other stakeholders
  • Knowledge of operation of parks and grounds maintenance programs, including athletic fields
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise emergency response and snow removal programs
  • Ability to prepare written and oral reports and ability to use MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook), the Internet, financial management software, work order software and other computer programs typically utilized by public works officials
  • Associate's degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a closely related field, with six years' experience in public works construction, management, maintenance and supervisory activities, or an accepted equivalent combination of education and experience
