In this role, you serve as a statewide public health consultant focused on reducing infant mortality and supporting Maternal and Infant Community Grant Initiatives. You work closely with local project partners, state agencies, medical professionals, and community organizations to move Ohio's maternal and infant health priorities forward.
This job blends public health expertise, project management, community engagement, and policy development. You are both a strategist and a hands-on implementer, shifting regularly between big-picture planning and operational details.
Public Health Consultation & Program Support
- Act as a subject-matter expert on infant mortality reduction for multiple local and statewide initiatives.
- Monitor health data and community trends to identify emerging issues and gaps.
- Provide ongoing technical assistance to local partners to strengthen public health practices and reduce health risks.
- Support the development of solutions to maternal and infant health challenges and promote evidence-based practices.
Communications & Education
- Work with Community Initiatives and Public Affairs teams to implement statewide marketing campaigns.
- Review and refine health education materials to ensure accuracy and cultural relevance.
- Coordinate printing, distribution, and publication of all campaign materials.
- Maintain and update subject-matter content on the Bureau's website.
Fiscal, Reporting, & Data Responsibilities
- Track program expenditures and report updates to managers and financial staff.
- Prepare records, reports, and data summaries for annual reports (e.g., Infant Mortality Report, Maternal & Child Health Block Grant Report).
- Complete fiscal documentation needed for purchasing, contracts, and budget activities.
Policy, Regulation, & Grant Administration
- Assist in developing policies, codes, and regulations related to maternal and infant health initiatives.
- Prepare or assist with grant applications, including needs assessments, budget projections, and program goals.
- Review and approve contract invoices and revise or develop service contracts.
- Oversee grant review processes, including scheduling, coordination, and development of RFGA announcements.
- Recommend funding decisions for local projects and draft grant conditions and contracts.
Grants & Contracting
- Prepare or assist in preparing grant applications, including estimating funding needs and defining objectives.
- Oversee grant review processes, including scheduling, coordination, and development of RFGA announcements.
- Review grant applications for appropriateness and funding potential.
- Develop or revise service contracts and oversee contract administrative processes.
- Schedule and coordinate grant review meetings; may chair review committees.
- Draft Requests for Grant Agreements and announcements of funding availability.
- Recommend approval or disapproval of grant requests and budget revisions.
Stakeholder Engagement & Partnership Building
- Provide technical assistance to health care providers, government officials, participants, and the general public.
- Serve as the liaison between BMECSS/DCY and internal or external partners.
- Facilitate partnerships with schools, faith-based groups, businesses, work sites, and other community organizations.
- Plan and coordinate meetings, recruit new partners, and collaborate on agendas.
- Support committees and partner groups by providing program updates and helping drive action plan goals.
Collaboration Across the State
- Work with pediatricians, OB/GYNs, hospitals, local health departments, child welfare agencies, and community organizations.
- Represent DCY on committees related to maternal and infant health.
- Help align statewide efforts to reduce infant mortality and strengthen family health outcomes.
Training & Evaluation
- Assess training needs for community partners and develop and deliver trainings.
- Create evaluation plans and surveys to measure program outcomes.
- Contribute articles to newsletters and help coordinate statewide communications.
Pay InformationUnless required by legislation or union contract, starting salary will be step 1 of the salary range associated with this position. New hires advance to the next step in the range after 6 months and annually thereafter. Based on collective bargaining and legislative activity, there may be cost of living increases awarded annually. Additional longevity supplements begin after 5 years. The current wage progression for this position is in the table below.
