Summary:

The Public Health Analyst supports public health surveillance, research, and program evaluation activities within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD). This position assists in the collection, management, analysis, and reporting of public health data related to birth defects, developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), maternal and child health, and related conditions.

 

Working under the guidance of senior analysts, epidemiologists, and statisticians, the PHA contributes to data-driven decision-making by supporting data cleaning, basic statistical analysis, report preparation, and documentation of public health findings. The role also assists with program operations, surveillance activities, and coordination with internal teams and external public health partners.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist in the collection, cleaning, and validation of public health surveillance and research data.
  • Support basic statistical analyses using SAS, R, SQL, or similar tools under supervision.
  • Prepare tables, charts, and summary reports for internal program use and stakeholder reporting.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of datasets, data dictionaries, and documentation.
  • Assist in identifying and resolving data quality issues in collaboration with senior analysts.
  • Support surveillance activities related to birth defects, developmental disabilities, and related public health priorities.
  • Help maintain records, tracking systems, and reporting tools for program activities.
  • Assist with preparation of presentations, technical summaries, and program updates.
  • Support coordination with internal CDC staff and external partners such as state health departments.
  • Follow established data governance, confidentiality, and security protocols.
Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to interpret and summarize basic data findings.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Foundational Data Analysis: Assists with basic data cleaning, validation, and descriptive analysis using SAS, R, SQL, Excel, or similar tools.
  • Public Health Surveillance Support: Supports data collection, reporting, and surveillance activities related to birth defects, developmental disabilities, and related public health programs.
  • Data Reporting & Documentation: Prepares basic tables, summaries, and reports; assists with maintaining datasets, data dictionaries, and technical documentation.
  • Quality & Accuracy Focus: Identifies basic data issues, supports quality checks, and follows established protocols for data integrity and confidentiality.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Works effectively in team environments, communicates clearly, and supports coordination with internal staff and external public health partners.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Data Science, Statistics, Health Informatics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in public health, data analysis, research, or related field (internship or academic experience acceptable).
  • Basic experience using statistical or data tools such as SAS, R, SQL, Python, Excel, or similar software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience supporting public health programs, surveillance systems, or research projects.
  • Exposure to CDC programs, maternal and child health, developmental disabilities, or epidemiologic research.
  • Experience creating basic reports, dashboards, or data visualizations.
  • Familiarity with data quality assurance and public health reporting processes.

 

Pay and Benefits

The annual salary for this position is $85,000 to $105,000.
