Minimum Qualifications

Who We Are:
Mental Health Support Services (MHSS) is the provider of mental health, developmental disabilities, and substance use disorder services for children and adults in Chesterfield County. The Medical Services team is seeking a qualified and experienced Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to join our team. The position will work closely with the Substance Use Outpatient team in addition to the medical/psychiatric team of providers, nurses and medication assistants.

Minimum Education and Experience:
Completed MSN or DNP program to practice as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and a Clinical Nurse Specialist. Licensed as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist in Mental Health. Unrestricted current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Virginia with at least one year of psychiatric practice in any setting. DEA registration number. Experience in prescribing Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) preferred. Or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the principles and practices of psychiatric nursing; of psychopathology, psychodynamics, and psychopharmacology; of medical terminology. Ability to provide nursing care to individuals with severe mental illness; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment; to interact with a variety of people from different cultures and backgrounds and of varying ages; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers. Experience working with different populations including individuals with substance use disorders, serious mental illness (SMI), ID/DD population, co-occurring disorders preferred; experience working at a community services board (CSB) preferred; knowledge or willingness to learn about the use of medications for opioid use disorders (MOUD) such as buprenorphine, naltrexone and other medications used for other substance use disorders ( e.g Alcohol) is preferred.

Additional Requirements
  • Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required
  • Possess licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Board of Nursing, DEA license.

Duties

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Provides treatment and support for individuals suffering from substance use disorders;
  • Performs psychiatric evaluations and treatment to adult consumers across the agency;
  • Prepares and administers prescribed medications, treatments, and therapies;
  • Provides medication follow up for established adult patients;
  • Coordinates with other programs to establish collaboration of care (PRS, SUS, ID/DD, Adult mental health);
  • Conducts collateral contacts with client families or other community providers associated with client care;
  • Actively participates in medical staff meetings;
  • Performs chart reviews and audits;
  • Processes documentation to include court letters, DMV forms, and disability forms; reviews patient records;
  • Consults with nursing personnel and other programs in the care of shared consumers/patients;
  • Reviews diagnostic lab work; collaborates with primary care providers via phone and other forms of communication; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Shift

Monday - Friday; 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; with one 10-hour shift a day and one 6-hour shift a day
