What can you expect?

As the Project Estimator, you will be responsible for identifying bidding opportunities, preparing detailed cost estimates, and managing all preconstruction estimating activities for potential design/build and construction projects throughout Alaska. You will lead quantity takeoffs, labor and material pricing, subcontractor quote evaluation, and development of complete project estimates. You will work closely with Project Managers to align cost models with project requirements, budget constraints, and logistical considerations, and provides estimating support during both preconstruction and the construction phase when needed.

This is a U.S. based remote position. Applicants must reside and be authorized to work in the United States. Preferred locations Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California.

How will you do it?

  • Identify, evaluate, and track potential bidding opportunities in collaboration with Business Development and Project Management.
  • Review and analyze Request for Proposal (RFP) packages.
  • Participate in client discussions to clarify scope and project requirements.
  • Prepare complete cost estimates including quantity takeoffs, labor, materials, equipment, tools/consumables, transportation, and temporary living arrangements.
  • Analyze labor and material requirements to determine cost-efficiency of self-performing vs. subcontracting certain scopes.
  • Validate that all factors—scope, logistics, schedule, and project constraints—are fully incorporated into estimates.
  • Solicit, evaluate, and analyze subcontractor and vendor quotes for integration into project estimates.
  • Develop and submit prequalification packages and scope letters.
  • Conduct site visits to verify scope, drawings, and logistical considerations; may require overnight travel.
  • Lead turnover meetings with Project Managers for successful bids.
  • Assist Project Managers in developing project budgets aligned with estimate parameters.
  • Support Project Management in pricing change orders and additional work.
  • Review all estimates (including those prepared by others) for completeness and accuracy.
  • Maintain estimating software and cost history databases.
  • Oversee management of historical cost records and benchmarking data.
  • Support STG Pacific’s Health and Safety Program and adhere to all required practices.
  • Respond to safety observations and modify estimating or planning approaches when necessary.
  • Collaborate with Risk Management to resolve safety-related concerns raised during preconstruction review.
  • Serve as a professional point of contact for clients.
  • Maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Seek and participate in professional development and training.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Functions:

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities but may provide direction to estimating or project support personnel as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of vertical construction concepts, methods, and practices applicable to estimating, preconstruction and execution.
  • Strong knowledge of construction estimating methods, quantity takeoffs, labor/material analysis, and cost modeling techniques.
  • Advanced ability to use Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and laptop-based applications; ability to maintain and utilize estimating software.
  • Ability to understand schedules, interpret project constraints, and collaborate with PMs during preconstruction and post-award phases.
  • Understanding of construction, architectural, and building industry standards, specifications, and procedures.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply contract documents, RFP packages, drawings, plans, and technical specifications for estimating purposes.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, cost estimating, revenue models, cost-to-completion concepts, and project financial forecasting.
  • Knowledge of procurement rules, vendor sourcing, subcontractor quote evaluation, and related regulatory requirements.
  • Strong analytical ability; able to evaluate data, compare alternatives, identify risks, and support strategic pricing decisions.
  • Effective written, verbal, and graphical communication skills; able to coordinate with PMs, vendors, clients, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors, subcontractors, and internal teams; strong follow-up skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage deadlines, and organize work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrates integrity, sound judgment, and ethical behavior in all business dealings.
  • Ability to detect issues, analyze complex information, and propose effective solutions. Able to adjust to changing project demands, field conditions, and construction requirements.
  • Ability to comply with and support enforcement of company policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Ability to travel to job sites or field locations (up to 15% of the time).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction required.
  • Four (4) years of related project management or estimating experience required.
  • Experience preparing budgets, cost estimates, and project financial analyses.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) and project-related software.
  • Experience with USACE, NAVFAC or other federal government branches.
  • Valid state driver’s license and must be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of Company’s Driving Policy.
  • Ability to pass drug, driving and background screenings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with HCCS “HeavyBid” and or Timberline / Sage software preferred.

Working Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. STG Pacific has a fast-paced, multi-tasking work environment requiring a high degree of accuracy, organization, and effective performance while managing multiple estimating efforts and competing deadlines. Work is primarily performed in a remote office setting; however, periodic travel to project sites, client meetings, pre-bid conferences, and indoor and outdoor construction locations may be required to verify existing conditions and support estimating activities. Adaptability regarding changing project priorities, proposal deadlines, and occasional extended hours may be necessary to support bid submissions and business needs.
