Full Job Description
The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is adding a Project Engineer to our Power team. This role can be performed from anywhere in the United States. This position offers the opportunity to lead and support the execution of complex power infrastructure projects, including high-voltage substations, HVDC converter stations, transmission systems, and renewable energy interconnections. The successful candidate will combine strong technical expertise with project execution capabilities to deliver high-quality engineering solutions for utility and industrial clients.

Position Summary:

We are currently seeking a Project Engineer for our Power Division. This position will support the planning, coordination, integration, and execution of electrical infrastructure projects from concept through commissioning. The successful candidate will work closely with project managers, discipline leads, clients, and contractors to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with technical and quality requirements.

Essential Job Functions:
  • As the project engineer, act as the overall engineering lead. Provide direction and guidance to discipline leads and coordinate the technical aspects of projects.
  • Coordinate and execute engineering activities for substation, HVDC, transmission, and renewable energy projects.
  • Support project managers in the planning, scheduling, budgeting, and delivery of engineering projects.
  • Coordinate the preparation, document review, interdisciplinary review, and issuance readiness of engineering deliverables, including design criteria, reports, specifications, calculations, drawings, studies, and vendor documents.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure alignment of project objectives, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Monitor project progress and provide regular updates regarding scope, schedule, budget, and technical issues.
  • Support the development of project execution plans, work breakdown structures, staffing plans, and resource forecasts.
  • Interface with clients, vendors, contractors, and internal stakeholders to facilitate project execution and resolve technical issues.
  • Coordinate and track vendor drawings reviews, confirm that applicable disciplines are engaged, monitor review status and due dates. Participate in technical evaluations, bid reviews, procurement activities, and equipment selection processes.
  • Assist in preparing engineering cost estimates, proposals, and responses to client Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Coordinate design reviews, interdisciplinary reviews, and quality assurance activities.
  • Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies to support successful project delivery.
  • Provide and coordinate construction support, including responses to RFIs, field reviews, commissioning support, and issue resolution.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering standards, project execution, and quality processes.
  • Mentor discipline leads, junior engineers and designers and support knowledge-sharing initiatives across project teams.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng. or PE) registration, or eligibility to obtain registration within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Minimum 10-15 years of progressive experience in electrical engineering, project engineering, or project delivery roles.
  • Demonstrated experience with high-voltage substations, HVDC converter stations, transmission systems, or utility-scale renewable energy projects.
  • Strong understanding of electrical power systems, substation design, protection and control systems, and utility project execution.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams and managing engineering deliverables.
  • Familiarity with utility industry standards and applicable codes, including IEEE, NEC, CSA, IEC, ANSI, NESC, and related standards.
  • Experience preparing technical specifications, equipment evaluations, engineering reports, and procurement documentation.
  • Working knowledge of engineering design processes, construction practices, and commissioning activities.
  • Experience reviewing vendor documentation and coordinating with equipment manufacturers and contractors.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and scheduling skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including client-facing experience.
  • Experience working within consulting engineering environments is highly desirable.
  • HVDC project experience, including converter stations, transmission integration, or owner's engineering support, is considered a strong asset.
  • PMP certification will be considered an asset.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit or stand as required and remain in a stationary position for at least 50% of the workday.
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle, manipulate, or feel objects, including continuous operation of a computer and other standard office equipment such as calculators, copiers, and printers.

Work Environment / Environmental Factors:
  • The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting.
  • Periodic travel may be required and could involve limited exposure to extreme temperatures. Travel may include air travel, during which the employee may be required to remain seated for extended periods.

The salary range for this position is $145,000 to $195,000. Please note that Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining pay, including but not limited to: education, relevant and demonstrated work experience in the role, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the business.
