The Opportunity:

Tetra Tech is seeking a technically driven Project Engineer (Civil PE) to join our Boston, MA office. This role is ideal for an engineer who is passionate about civil and water/wastewater infrastructure design and is interested in progressing toward a project management track. You'll play a key technical role on multidisciplinary teams delivering complex municipal and utility projects throughout New England and across the U.S.

Our Boston team supports clients with innovative, practical solutions for water and wastewater treatment, conveyance systems, stormwater management, and site infrastructure. This is a great opportunity to deepen your technical expertise while gaining exposure to project delivery, coordination, and client-facing work.

Position Summary:

The Project Engineer (Civil PE) is responsible for supporting the technical delivery of water, wastewater, and civil infrastructure projects from design through construction. This role focuses on performing engineering analyses, developing design documents, and ensuring accuracy and quality across project deliverables.

Essential Functions:
  • Support the planning and design of water/wastewater treatment, distribution/conveyance, and pumping systems
  • Perform hydraulic calculations, pipe and equipment sizing, and detailed civil design
  • Prepare construction documents including drawings, technical specifications, reports, and cost estimates
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and project managers to ensure design quality and technical accuracy
  • Review contractor submittals and respond to RFIs during construction phases
  • Assist with site visits, field investigations, and occasional construction observation
  • Work closely with CAD designers, junior engineers, and other technical staff
  • Gain exposure to task management and client interaction to grow toward a PM role


Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in civil infrastructure or water/wastewater projects
  • Strong technical background in one or more of the following: site grading, utilities, hydraulics, treatment processes, or stormwater systems
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D; familiarity with Revit, InfoWater/InfoWorks, or similar tools is a plus
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel (~15%) to project sites and client meetings


Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer and performing design tasks
  • Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate a computer, keyboard, and engineering software
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret detailed engineering drawings, plans, and specifications
  • Ability to stand, walk, and navigate active project or construction sites during field visits
  • Ability to occasionally lift or carry light materials (up to 25 pounds) such as field equipment or documents
  • Visual acuity to review technical data, drawings, and digital models
  • Ability to travel to project sites and perform fieldwork activities as needed


Work Environment / Environmental Factors:

  • Work performed primarily in a professional office setting with standard engineering tools and software
