Job Description

The Project Engineer develops and implements improvements that support the safe, efficient, and cost-effective processing, handling, and shipping of plate products through Rolling Mill and Finishing. The role uses production, quality, and delay data to improve procedures, output, product quality, equipment performance, and project execution across rolling, leveling, cutting, testing, and finishing operations.

Main Responsibilities / Essential Functions
  • Analyze production, quality, and delay data from MES, ODA, caster, and departmental systems to identify trends, bottlenecks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Review, revise, and implement operating procedures that improve product quality, productivity, energy use, environmental performance, and cost.
  • Lead or support 5S, DMAIC, Lean, and other continuous improvement projects from identification through completion.
  • Investigate processing inefficiencies and recurring production issues; identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with maintenance and automation teams to improve equipment and control-system reliability, utilization, and uptime.
  • Provide engineering support for troubleshooting, repairs, equipment upgrades, and process optimization.
  • Lead or support equipment selection, installation, commissioning, construction oversight, and startup for departmental and expansion projects.
  • Develop and maintain Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Quality System Procedures (QSPs), and other required operating standards.
  • Support safety programs, incident and near-miss investigations, hazard assessments, corrective actions, safety meetings, and housekeeping standards.
  • Train and provide technical guidance to operators on procedures, equipment, safety practices, and operational consistency.
  • Coordinate departmental goals and project plans with the Rolling Mill and Finishing Manager and provide updates on progress, equipment performance, budgets, capital expenditures, and operating status.
  • Conduct customer-site visits as needed to investigate and resolve product quality concerns.
  • Apply relevant ASTM, API, ABS, ISO, OSHA, environmental, company, and departmental requirements.
  • Understand and support the company's goals and values and follow company, department, safety, quality, environmental, and ethics policies and procedures.


About You / Qualifications

Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years of industrial production experience, preferably in a rolling mill or plate finishing environment.
  • Knowledge of steel plate rolling, leveling, cutting, testing, and finishing processes.
  • Ability to analyze production, quality, and delay data and translate findings into practical operating improvements.
  • Experience leading cross-functional projects and continuous improvement activities.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Good computer skills including proficiency with M365, Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), and production or delay tracking systems such as ODA.
  • Ability to learn and apply new digital tools, technologies, and analytics.
  • Effective communication, collaboration, interpersonal and teamwork skills.


Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Metallurgical, or related field.)
  • Hands-on experience with plate rolling and finishing equipment and basic maintenance practices.
  • Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certification or demonstrated experience; Green Belt or Black Belt preferred.
  • Knowledge of caster, technical services, production, shipping, and Level 2, Level 3, or Level 4 manufacturing systems.
