Project Accountant
Job Description
The Project Accountant supports assigned project teams by ensuring that all project financial information is accurate, timely, and compliant with contractual and organizational requirements. This role plays a key part in maintaining the financial health of projects through billing support, job cost tracking, documentation management, and proactive communication with internal teams and external partners. The position requires a high level of accountability, strong organizational skills, and the ability to apply sound judgment when managing competing priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with the preparation of owner billings and subcontractor invoices to support accurate and timely project cash flow.
  • Coordinate accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, proactively identify discrepancies, and help resolve issues impacting payments or collections.
  • Support job cost tracking, expense coding, and account reconciliation to ensure financial data accurately reflects project performance.
  • Establish and maintain complete and organized project financial records, including contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, and change documentation.
  • Monitor subcontractor and vendor compliance requirements such as insurance certificates, lien waivers, and certified payroll documentation.
  • Serve as a reliable financial support partner to project teams by communicating clearly, responding promptly to questions, and anticipating financial information needs.
  • Assist with project closeout activities, including preparation of final billings, completion of reconciliations, and compilation of required financial documentation.
  • Prioritize workload effectively, demonstrate critical thinking, and take ownership for delivering accurate results within established deadlines.
  • Collaborate with project managers and other stakeholders to ensure alignment between financial records and project execution.
  • Use construction accounting or project management systems to support billing, job costing, and financial reporting activities.

Essential Skills
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or 5 years of equivalent construction accounting experience.
  • Working knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and job cost principles.
  • Hands-on experience with construction accounting or construction project accounting, including job cost, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and billing.
  • Experience with construction accounting or project management systems such as Viewpoint, Procore, GCPay, or Oracle-based systems.
  • Ability to bill using AIA formats or familiarity with AIA billing processes.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills to support collaboration with project teams and external partners.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated accountability, initiative, and sound judgment when resolving financial issues and navigating competing priorities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in construction accounting environments, including invoice processing and job costing.
  • Experience in contract administration, including prime contracts, subcontracts, and change orders.
  • Experience with financial coordination between project teams, subcontractors, and other external partners.
  • Experience with compliance tracking such as insurance certificates, lien waivers, certified payroll, and diversity and inclusion reporting.
  • Experience with invoice management and reconciliation in a project-based environment.
  • Experience supporting project closeout and financial reconciliation activities.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Comfort working in a deadline-driven environment while maintaining accuracy and completeness of financial records.

Work Environment
This position operates in a standard office-based environment in a quiet work setting. The role involves regular use of computers, construction accounting or project management systems, and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel. The position may occasionally require lifting or moving items up to 25 pounds. There is minimal exposure to physical risk. The role requires the ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $65000.00 - $99000.00/yr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
