Full Job Description
We are hiring immediately for a Programmer Analyst II to join the Center for Outcome Research at UTHealth Houston in Houston, TX. In this position, you will work with faculty investigators and senior staff to create the coding required to extract or manage data to support research projects. Ideal candidate should have strong SQL programming skills and experience with software such as SAS, R or Python. Experience with large-scale electronic health record (EHR) data repositories such as Epic Cosmos and Cerner Real-World Data, as well as Clinical Research Data Management using REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) system or other similar platforms is preferred.

Position Summary:

The Center for Outcome Research has a series of projects related to health outcomes and clinical trials. The Programmer Analyst II works with faculty, researchers and senior staff to create the coding required to extract data from EHR data repositories and other sources to support researchers' questions. Responsible for developing program specifications, writing and maintaining programs, coding and testing programs. This position encourages creative thinking and depends on the ability to work productively with a wide range of team members including data scientists, experienced programmers, biostatisticians and project managers, etc.

Position Key Accountabilities:
  • Consults with and analyzes the users' needs to ensure the programming and resulting data extract fulfills required needs.
  • Analyzes/designs system flows and develops/codes program specification to ensure the agreed upon requirements are met.
  • Writes, tests, and implements computer programs. Codes straight-forward to moderately complex programs and ensures that the programs conform to departmental standards
  • Tests programming thoroughly to ensure all expected results are verified and discrepancies are resolved.
  • Adheres to departmental standards to ensure the consistency of product produced.
  • Participates in structured technical and functional walk-through with project team members and reports status of programming to team members/clients on a regular basis to ensure a full understanding of the program and the status of completion.
  • Resolves problems that arise with existing data systems to ensure the efficiency and proper functioning of programs and systems.

Certification/Skills:
  • None required
  • Preferred:
    Strong SQL programming skills with robust Query Tuning & Troubleshooting and proficiency in at least one scripting language (Python, R, or SAS).
    • Ability to transform raw EHR data into analytic-ready datasets per study protocols.
    • Experience with large-scale EHR data repositories such as Epic Cosmos, Cerner Real-World Data, TriNetX, or Optum is a plus
    • Experience with clinical research workflows, including IRB processes and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) data standards, clinical data management, or health informatics is preferred

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics, Data Science, Biostatistics, or related field or relevant experience in lieu of education required.

Minimum Experience:

2 years of programming experience required. Prefer experienced in clincical research or related fields.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
