Epic Program Director, Office of the Vice President & Chief Digital & Information Officer
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is seeking an Epic Program Director, Office of the Vice President & Chief Digital & Information Officer to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight of Epic application workflows, system optimization, and end-user enablement. The Epic Program Director, Office of the Vice President & Chief Digital & Information Officer plays a critical role in advancing enterprise clinical systems by driving key program initiatives, upgrade readiness, testing strategies, and adoption efforts that support high-quality patient care and operational excellence. The Epic Program Director, Office of the Vice President & Chief Digital & Information Officer partners closely with clinical, operational, and technical stakeholders to ensure Epic solutions align with institutional priorities and deliver measurable outcomes.
The ideal candidate will bring a preferred Master's degree along with certifications such as ITIL, Lean/Six Sigma, or PMP, combined with extensive experience leading enterprise-level Epic programs in complex healthcare environments. This individual will demonstrate deep expertise in upgrade readiness, testing, and adoption strategies, along with strong leadership and stakeholder engagement capabilities to influence physicians, nursing leadership, and operational teams while driving measurable improvements.

Responsibilities
Epic Upgrade Management
Leads and oversees the end-to-end lifecycle of Epic upgrades within assigned application domains, ensuring readiness, minimal disruption, and successful adoption across clinical and operational areas.
• Provide leadership oversight for impact assessments, regression testing, and workflow validation across Epic modules
• Partner with TDI, operational leaders, and stakeholders to interpret release notes and assess workflow impacts
• Ensure completion of pre-upgrade build tasks, testing cycles, and post-upgrade validation activities
• Escalate risks, issues, and dependencies to ensure timely resolution
• Develop and deliver targeted communications and training for upgrade-related changes
• Coordinate with DOI infrastructure teams to align upgrade scheduling with organizational readiness
Epic Program Activities - Gold Stars & Nova Notes
Champions Epic optimization programs to drive continuous improvement in workflow efficiency and feature utilization.
• Lead Gold Stars assessments to identify gaps and develop action plans to achieve designation
• Oversee implementation of Nova Notes and optimization opportunities aligned to efficiency goals
• Monitor adoption metrics and report progress to departmental and DOI leadership
• Collaborate with stakeholders to promote engagement and awareness of optimization initiatives
• Partner with Epic and peer organizations to incorporate best practices into optimization strategies
Testing & Quality Assurance
Plans and directs comprehensive testing strategies across the Epic application lifecycle.
• Design and oversee execution of test scripts for complex clinical and operational workflows
• Lead Integrated Testing Events coordinating analysts, super users, and stakeholders
• Track defects and ensure timely resolution with clear escalation pathways
• Validate system functionality and workflow performance prior to go-live
• Maintain documentation including test plans, scripts, and results aligned with standards
Routine Epic Program & Feature Adoption Activities
Oversees ongoing system management and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Manage enhancement and optimization request queues, prioritizing and coordinating delivery
• Monitor Epic UserWeb and release updates to identify relevant features
• Oversee configuration of Epic tools including Haiku, Canto, MyChart, BPAs, and order sets
• Facilitate workflow review sessions to identify inefficiencies and improvement opportunities
• Oversee super user program including training, engagement, and support
• Support help desk operations by monitoring ticket resolution and user satisfaction
End-User Support & Stakeholder Engagement
Ensures effective service delivery and strong collaboration across stakeholders.
• Oversee Epic application support ensuring compliance with ITSM practices and SLAs
• Establish and monitor KPIs related to service quality and application stability
• Partner with DOI Service Management to align with incident, problem, and change management
• Serve as escalation point for complex application issues
• Collaborate with clinical and operational leaders to drive engagement and adoption
• Design and oversee role-based training programs for end users
• Mentor analysts and tech liaisons to promote continuous learning and development

EDUCATION
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree
  • Preferred: Master's Degree

WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Required: 7 years In information technology services, to include three years of program or process management to include two years supervisory/management experience.
  • May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience on a one to one basis.
  • Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.
    • Experience leading strategic, enterprise-wide programs in complex hospital or healthcare environments.
    • Strong program/project management expertise with a focus on process improvement and operational transformation.
    • Proven ability to influence and align physicians, nursing leadership, operational stakeholders, and IT teams around organizational priorities.
    • Currently or recent direct leadership experience of Epic initiatives, including upgrade readiness, integrated testing, go-live execution, and post-go-live adoption.
    • Demonstrated success driving change management and user adoption across multiple clinical and operational domains.
    • Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills with experience operating at an institutional scale.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Preferred: ITIL certification.
  • Preferred: Lean/Six Sigma certification.
  • Preferred: PMP - Project Mgt Professional

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
