The Magna Exteriors portfolio of products includes access systems such as liftgates, exterior trim, modular systems, front-end modules including fascia, active aerodynamic systems and other lightweight structural components for automotive, commercial truck and other industrial markets.

Job Responsibilities:

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Product Engineer applies engineering principles and analytical techniques to the design and development of product concepts, components, and assemblies. The Product Engineer will be responsible for process, material, and product development supporting the development and launch of new product programs for Magna Exteriors.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support full product development lifecycle including concept development (clay model phases), design maturation, tooling development, check fixture development, validation, launch, and post-SOP support.
  • Provide engineering direction and support during design reviews with cross-functional teams including program management, manufacturing, design and sales.
  • Identify and communicate product development design direction to improve operational, cost, quality, and manufacturing feasibility.
  • Analyze design problems and develop engineering solutions using engineering and mathematical principles.
  • Support prototype tooling development and coordinate prototype builds.
  • Assist with material selection and optimization during product development and prototype build phases.
  • Provide technical support and follow-up on design validation and product testing activities.
  • Support program management activities including project timing, engineering deliverables, and cost tracking.
  • Create and execute project goals, schedules, and deliverables.
  • Maintain program documentation including engineering open issue lists and timelines.
  • Support engineering change management and customer change requests.
  • Travel as necessary to support division and OEM launch activities.
  • Coordinate engineering activities between program management, design engineering, manufacturing teams, suppliers, and OEM customer representatives.
  • Interface directly with OEM engineering teams for design reviews and approvals.
  • Collaborate with Tier-1 and Tier-2 suppliers on feasibility reviews, tooling development, and manufacturing readiness.
  • Develop professional customer relationships to support program success.
  • Review CAD models and engineering drawings using visualization tools such as CATIA, NX, or Spinfire.
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to ensure proper component design and manufacturability.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis for assemblies to ensure fit and functional performance.
  • Ensure vehicle integration requirements including fit & finish, alignment, flushness, and gap targets are met.

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field
  • Working knowledge of product development processes and automotive manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with CAD systems such as CATIA, NX, or equivalent engineering software.
  • Understanding of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles.
  • Knowledge of APQP, DFMEA, DVP&R, root cause analysis, and structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Knowledge of automotive materials, manufacturing processes, tooling, and assembly methods preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.


EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum 3-5 years of diversified engineering or product development experience (some manufacturing experience preferred).
  • Experience supporting full product lifecycle development from concept through launch.
  • Experience supporting high-volume automotive manufacturing programs.
