LAPORTE is seeking a Process Safety / Refrigeration Engineer with a minimum of 2 years of experience in process safety and industrial refrigeration.

This position is open anywhere in Canada, in hybrid mode from any of our Canadian offices.

Reporting to the Lead Refrigeration Engineer, our Process Safety / Refrigeration Engineer will support process hazard analyses, process safety management programs and the safe design of ammonia and CO2 refrigeration systems for our food & beverage, pharmaceutical and industrial biotechnology clients.

Responsibilities:
  • Plan and facilitate refrigeration related process hazard analyses (PHA): HAZOP, What-If, checklist, bowtie analysis, LOPA studies and other risk related hazard identification methodologies. This will include;
    • Review process safety information : PFDs, P&IDs, equipment data sheets, control and safeguarding systems : to interpret the design and define the nodes to be analyzed;
    • Prepare and program PHA tools (PHA-Pro or equivalent) ahead of sessions, and consistently and accurately record technical and design discussions during studies;
    • Write clear technical PHA reports, structure risk analytics data maintain risk classification philosophy;
  • Support the development, review and auditing of client Process Safety Management (PSM) programs, including CSA Z767 as well as provincial boiler and pressure equipment safety authority regulations, and provincial occupational health and safety requirements;
  • Learning methodology and tools to perform indoor and outdoor dispersion analysis and other general hazard/risk assessments.
  • Contribute to any ammonia safety deliverables: relief system design, machinery room ventilation calculations, system inventory vessel sizing calculations;
  • Conduct site inspections of refrigeration systems, field verification of P&IDs, and conduct safety and code compliance audits.
  • Write, format and proofread specifications, proposals, reports, templates and other documents as needed to complete project goals and requirements
  • Perform mass and energy balance calculations and supporting engineering analyses for refrigeration and related process systems;
  • Participate in the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and operator training material;
  • Organize and maintain project records
  • Provide technical support and build relationships with new and existing clients;
  • Collaborate with internal and external team members to ensure project success.

Requirements:
  • Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, or relevant qualifications in a related field;
  • Member of a Canadian provincial engineering association, either as P.Eng. or EIT (OIQ, PEO, APEGA, EGBC, etc.);
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in process safety, the chemical process industry or industrial refrigeration;
  • Bilingual (French/English) ;
  • Participation in PHA sessions (HAZOP, LOPA, What-If) as a scribe, participant or facilitator;
  • Familiarity with ammonia and CO2 refrigeration systems;
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including CSA B52, IIAR, ASHRAE 15, ASME B31.5/B31.3 and CSA Z767;
  • Ability to read and interpret PFDs and P&IDs;
  • Strong technical writing skills and attention to detail;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively;
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Ability to travel to client sites in Canada, the United States and internationally;
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license;
  • Proficient in Microsoft suite of applications with advanced MS Excel skills and familiarity using various AI tools such as Claude code and Copilot.
  • Knowledge of PHA software (PHA-Pro, PHAWorks), process simulation tools and AutoCAD, Revit or Plant 3D (an asset).
