We're seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the architecture and evolution of the audio and video communication infrastructure powering our Connected Care products. In this highly visible role, you'll own mission-critical systems that enable seamless, real-time communication experiences for healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers.
This is more than a telecom engineering role—it's an opportunity to build scalable, high-performance communication platforms that directly support better healthcare outcomes. You'll leverage deep expertise in VoIP, SIP, and real-time media technologies to deliver highly available, ultra-low latency solutions while helping shape the future of connected healthcare.
What You'll be doingAs a technical leader, you will:
Architect and evolve the core audio and video communication infrastructure that powers our Connected Care ecosystem.
Design and operate highly available SIP routing platforms supporting real-time communications at scale.
Scale and optimize media servers, Session Border Controllers (SBCs), and signaling environments to ensure exceptional reliability and performance.
Build intelligent, low-latency call routing solutions that deliver seamless communication experiences.
Partner with software engineering teams to integrate voice and video capabilities into modern applications and services.
Investigate and resolve complex real-time communication challenges, including media quality issues, packet loss, latency, and network performance.
Drive technical strategy and establish engineering best practices for voice and video infrastructure.
Mentor engineers across the organization and serve as a subject matter expert in telecom and real-time communications technologies.
What you'll bring5+ years of experience developing and supporting real-time voice and video communication systems.
Deep hands-on expertise with SIP and related telecommunications protocols.
Strong experience building and operating VoIP platforms in production environments.
Production-level experience with Kamailio or FreeSWITCH.
Experience developing backend services using .NET or Node.js/TypeScript.
Ability to troubleshoot complex network, signaling, and media delivery challenges.
Preferred QualificationsExperience developing call-routing logic and automation using LUA.
Hands-on experience with WebRTC, STUN/TURN, and browser-based audio/video communications.
Familiarity with Asterisk platforms and deployments.
Strong ANSI C knowledge for low-level debugging, media processing, and infrastructure optimization.
Advanced proficiency with Node.js and TypeScript.

We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. At Baxter, we are committed to equitable pay for all employees, and we strive to be more transparent with our pay practices. The estimated base salary for this position is $120,000 to $165,000 annually. The estimated range is meant to reflect an anticipated salary range for the position. We may pay more or less than of the anticipated range based upon market data and other factors, all of which are subject to change. Individual pay is based on upon location, skills and expertise, experience, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
