TEAM:                     Private Investment Technology

LOCATION:          Boston

At Wellington Management our appetite for technology is insatiable.  We recognize that the world is full of fascinating questions that will impact the future of companies, economies, financial markets, and entire industries. We want you to help us find answers to these questions by building and evolving our innovative, industry-leading, technology platform.

We are seeking qualified candidates to join our evolving and expanding technology team. Together, you will not only dream up solutions to today’s investment challenges, but you will build them to see real-life results.  Technology needs are advancing, and this level of complexity requires a highly sophisticated well-managed technology platform that is built by people like you. This is your chance to build something incredible. We build seamless, cohesive tools used by investors across all asset classes to conduct research and build portfolios. We want you to think big, to solve challenges, and positively impact our clients.

JOB OVERVIEW

Wellington Management is investing heavily in expanding its Private Investments platform, which is one of the firm’s fastest-growing and most strategic areas. We are seeking a senior-level Principal Developer to play a critical role in building the technology foundation that will support this growth.

This is a unique opportunity to operate at the center of the private investments ecosystem. Unlike many roles that focus on a single function, this position works across the full platform partnering with Investment teams, Fund Control & Operations, Valuation, Legal, Compliance, and Reporting to deliver integrated, end-to-end solutions.

You will serve as a hands-on technical leader and architect, shaping platforms that support the full private investment lifecycle from deal sourcing and execution to portfolio management and operational processes while helping define the next generation of scalable, data-driven investment infrastructure.

In addition, you will play a key role in advancing the firm’s use of AI both to enhance engineering productivity and to enable investment and operations teams to work more efficiently and make better decisions.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture & Engineering Leadership

  • Act as a senior technical leader and hands-on architect across private investment platforms
  • Design and deliver scalable, high-quality systems supporting lifecycle workflows and data integration
  • Lead modernization of existing platforms into modular, service-oriented architectures
  • Establish and enforce strong engineering standards, SDLC practices, and system observability

Delivery & Execution

  • Lead end-to-end delivery of strategic initiatives, from design through production
  • Partner with business stakeholders to translate complex investment workflows into technical solutions
  • Provide technical mentorship through design and code reviews, elevating engineering quality

AI Enablement & Productivity

  • Drive adoption of AI-assisted development practices (code generation, testing, deployment automation)
  • Partner with Investment and Operations teams to identify and implement AI-driven productivity improvements
  • Demonstrate and evangelize AI tools (e.g., Copilot, ChatGPT) to improve research, workflows, and reporting
  • Prototype and embed AI-enabled capabilities into day-to-day business processes
  • Act as a change agent to drive adoption of AI across both technical and non-technical teams

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience building and supporting complex, business-critical systems
  • Strong hands-on development experience (Java, Python, or similar)
  • Expertise in distributed systems, APIs, and modern architecture patterns
  • Experience with messaging/streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS)
  • Strong understanding of data integration, system scalability, and production observability
  • Experience in financial services; exposure to private markets or investment platforms preferred

AI & Innovation

  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Copilot, LLM-based tools)
  • Understanding of how AI can improve both engineering productivity and business workflows
  • Proven ability to introduce new technologies and drive adoption across teams

Key Traits

  • Strong technical leadership with a hands-on mindset
  • Ability to influence both engineering and business stakeholders
  • High ownership, accountability, and execution focus
  • Curiosity and passion for innovation, including AI-driven transformation

Not sure you meet 100% of our qualifications?  That’s ok. If you believe that you could excel in this role, we encourage you to apply and welcome a chance to review your background. We are dedicated to building and maintaining a diversified workforce and considering a broad array of candidates with a variety of skill, workplace experiences, and backgrounds.
