Full Job Description
We9re looking for a Principal Compliance Engineer with deep expertise in regulatory requirements, codes, and certification processes applicable to BESS, power electronics, and electrical distribution systems e.g. panelboards, switchboards, etc.. This is a product-focused and cross-functional role responsible for ensuring that our systems meet all applicable North American and international standards, as well as ISO/RTO interconnection and market requirements. You will serve as the internal authority on compliance, working closely with product, R6D, and project engineering teams to ensure designs are certifiable, deployable, and aligned with evolving regulatory frameworks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead compliance strategy and execution for BESS, DC cabinets, inverters, and related power, controls /IT equipments.
  • Interpret and apply standards such as UL, CSA, IEEE, IEC, and NFPA to product and project designs.
  • Act as the subject matter expert on ISO/RTO regulatory requirements (e.g., interconnection, grid codes, testing protocols).
  • Define and manage certification roadmaps for new and existing products.
  • Coordinate and support product testing and certification activities, including UL listings, field evaluations, and special inspections.
  • Develop and maintain with Technical Writer compliance documentation, including test plans, reports, and certification packages.
  • Work directly with NRTLs and certification bodies to facilitate approvals and resolve technical issues.
  • Support engineering teams by ensuring designs meet code and standard requirements from early development stages.
  • Review and validate test procedures and results, including electrical, thermal, environmental, and safety testing.
  • Support project teams during AHJ reviews, permitting, and commissioning, addressing compliance-related questions.
  • Monitor and interpret regulatory changes and emerging standards, ensuring proactive alignment of products.

Required Skills & Experience:
  • Bachelor9s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 10+ years of experience in compliance, certification, or regulatory engineering for BESS, power electronics, or industrial electrical systems.
  • 4+ years experience with working knowledge of key standards, including:
    • UL (e.g., UL 9540, UL 9540A, UL 1741, UL 508A)
    • CSA standards for electrical equipment
    • IEEE standards related to power systems and interconnection
    • IEC standards for international compliance
    • NFPA (e.g., NFPA 855)
  • Deep understanding of test procedures and certification processes, including safety, thermal runaway, environmental, and performance testing.
  • Familiarity with ISO/RTO requirements (e.g., ERCOT, PJM, CAISO, MISO) and grid interconnection standards.
  • Experience working with NRTLs (e.g., UL, CSA, Intertek) and managing certification programs.
  • Ability to interpret and apply codes, standards, and regulatory language into practical engineering requirements.
  • Strong communication skills across engineering, regulatory authorities, and external certification bodies.
  • Project Management skills.

Preferred Experience:
  • Experience with utility-scale and/or C&I BESS deployments.
  • Direct involvement in UL 9540A fire testing, LSFT or similar safety validation programs.
  • Knowledge of utility -scale inverter compliance requirements.
  • Experience supporting permitting and AHJ engagement in the U.S.
  • Background in quality systems or regulatory audits.
