The Progressive Caucus is a voluntary group of members of the state legislature. The mission of the Progressive Caucus is to advance priority bills through educational and advocacy programs inside and outside the State House.
We seek a talented and experienced professional to support our leadership team in developing policy priorities and generating compelling public communication that receives broad coverage through social and traditional media and events.
Our focus for the 133rd Legislature may include:
- Tax fairness
- Low cost, renewable energy
- Health care for all
- Universal child care
- Wabanaki sovereignty
- Data privacy and AI regulation
- Housing
- Living wage
- Protecting Civil Liberties & Criminal Justice Reform
The Director reports to the Caucus Chair and the leadership team. Responsibilities will include:
- Working with members to develop policy priorities and strategies
- Engaging statewide coalitions around top priorities, including liaising with existing coalitions and building new ones as needed
- Developing communications strategies leveraging coalitions' communications infrastructure and creating original digital and Op-Ed content, and helping Caucus members effectively articulate policy positions
- Develop public advocacy programs to support caucus priorities
- Responsibilities do not include Lobbying as defined in statute: "Lobbying includes the time spent to prepare and submit to the Governor, an official in the legislative branch, an official in the executive branch, a constitutional officer or a legislative committee oral and written proposals for, or testimony or analyses concerning, a legislative action."
The ideal candidate will bring:
- At least five years of experience in policy and communications
- A successful track record of political advocacy
- Ability to envision and convey Caucus values and goals to public officials and the media
- Strong writing skills and ease with public speaking
- A relentless work ethic and a collaborative spirit
The position is full-time, for one year, with potential for renewal and is based in Augusta. Total compensation package, including benefits, is $80,000 to $90,000 annually depending on experience.
