Position Information
Newly hired Police Officer Trainees will participate in a comprehensive entry-level field training program under the guidance of experienced Field Training Officers, preparing them for both the police academy and a successful career in law enforcement.

Trainees will attend a full-time, 26-week Bay Area Police Academy, where they will receive extensive instruction in a variety of law enforcement topics, including criminal law, report writing, firearms, emergency vehicle operations, defensive tactics, and physical fitness. The academy is designed to challenge and develop each recruit's mental resilience, physical endurance, and professional skills.

Education, Experience and Age: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
• The candidate must be at least 20-1/2 years of age at date of application.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record must be maintained throughout employment.
• As a condition of continued employment, incumbents must successfully complete the certified POST Basic Academy course of instruction.

Application Process

The examination process will consist of:

1. Application Screening - Review of applications for minimum qualifications for the position.
2. Examination Process - A written examination OR Pellet B passing score will be required.
   • All candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will be required to take a written exam, unless a passing Pellet B score of at least 47 is attached to the application.
   • The written exam will be conducted on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at the Brentwood Community Center. To participate, you must first submit an application and be invited to the written examination. Please wait for your official invitation and confirmation before attending. Applicants who arrive without an invitation and confirmation will not be admitted to the examination.
3. Eligible List - All applicants that pass the examination process will be placed on the eligible list which is good for at least 6 months and may be extended up to an additional 18 months. This eligible list will be used by the City of Brentwood to fill all current and future openings in this classification as long as the list is active.
4. Physical Assessment and Oral Board Examinations will be held on September 13, 14 and 15.
5. Polygraph Exam - Selected candidates will be invited to take a polygraph exam.
6. Captains Interviews - The best qualified candidates will be invited for a Captains interview.
7. Background Investigation - Selected candidates will be invited to complete comprehensive background investigation process.
8. Police Chief - Final candidates will be invited to interview with the Police Chief.
9. Medical and Psychological Evaluations - One or more candidates may be provided a conditional offer of employment. All employment offers are contingent upon the successful completion of a medical and psychological evaluation.
10. Police Academy - Candidates that complete the hiring process will be enrolled in a Police Academy.
