Full Job Description
Academic Plastic Surgeon - Microsurgery & Breast Reconstruction

Banner-University of Arizona | Division of Plastic Surgery | Tucson, AZ

About the Opportunity

The Division of Plastic Surgery at the Banner-University of Arizona in Tucson offers a compelling opportunity for a full-time academic plastic surgeon seeking to build a high-impact career in a dynamic and rapidly expanding environment. Under the leadership of Joseph N. Carey, MD, the division is committed to advancing a mission centered on education, research, and clinical excellence. This is a program in active growth, where faculty are empowered to shape both their individual practices and the broader trajectory of the division. The Tucson marketplace is experiencing increasing demand for complex reconstructive services, particularly in microsurgical breast reconstruction and complex limb salvage, creating a unique opportunity to develop a robust, referral-driven microvascular surgery practice.

Faculty joining the division will benefit from a collaborative academic infrastructure and mentorship from departmental leadership, including Department Chair Geoffrey Gurtner MD. This environment fosters the development of academic leaders through access to institutional research resources, interdisciplinary partnerships, and support for scholarly activity. The division prioritizes training the next generation of plastic surgeons, offering opportunities to participate in resident and medical student education while contributing to curriculum development and innovation in microsurgical training. Surgeons with a passion for advancing the field will find a supportive platform to build impactful research programs and national reputations.

Importantly, this recruitment comes at a pivotal time for both the Tucson healthcare landscape and the broader field of academic plastic surgery. As regional demand grows and referral patterns shift toward Tucson, there is a clear mandate to expand capacity and elevate the division as a premier center for reconstructive excellence in the Southwest. At the same time, the evolving landscape of academic plastic surgery demands leaders who can integrate clinical innovation, outcomes research, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Joining this division offers the opportunity not only to grow a high-volume, complex reconstructive practice but also to play a defining role in shaping the future of academic plastic surgery at a regional and national level.

The ideal candidate will be a creative and collaborative professional with strong teamwork skills.
