Salary Range: $90,000 - $110,000 per year
The OpportunityWe are seeking a dedicated
Plastic Injection Tool Designer responsible for designing high-quality injection molds and tooling used in plastic manufacturing . This role involves creating detailed 3D models, engineering drawings, and specifications that ensure tools function efficiently, meet customer requirements, and support reliable, repeatable production.
What You'll Do- Collaborate Internally: Partner closely with engineering, manufacturing, and tooling teams as needed, and participate in design reviews. Attend T0, T1, PPAP samples.
- DFM Analysis: Review customer part drawings and 3D models to provide expert feedback on DFM.
- Mold Design: Deliver full 3D mold design packages, 2D detail drawings with Bill of Materials (BOMs), DFM reports, and engineering analysis with minimal supervision.
- Mold Flow Analysis: Outsource or perform Mold Flow Analysis' and thermal analysis to Validate tool performance prior to manufacturing.
- Systems Management: Maintain folder structure, revision documentation, and all other lifecycle data pertaining to mold design.
- Schedule Optimization: Review plastic part models for manufacturability, participate in design reviews, and provide expert feedback on mold concepts to meet project timelines .
- Outsource Support: Gather RFQ's from vendors on our approved vendor list for mold components as needed to meet due dates. Support external vendors with technical guidance as needed.
- Design Reviews: Schedule and host internal design reviews. Work closely with PM's to review the finalized mold design with G&F's customers. Participate in design reviews of designs created by outside sources.
- Problem Solve: Diagnose tooling issues like warpage, sink, short shots, venting, and cooling problems to recommend corrective tool modifications .
- Quality & Safety: Comply with G&F safety rules, policies, procedures, and execute all work in conformance with the G&F quality management system .
What You'll Bring - Experience: 3+ years of dedicated plastic injection mold tool design experience.
- Material Knowledge: Understanding of material shrinkage and behaviors of polymers like PEEK, liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR), Polycarbonate, ABS, and PP.
- GD&T Knowledge: Basic understanding of GD&T required (flatness, parallelism, concentricity, etc.)
- Print Reading Expertise: Ability to interpret and understand customer engineering drawings
- Microsoft Office: Basic understanding of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Ability to create and edit PowerPoint presentations, Word Documents, for both internal and external communication.
- Software Proficiency: Exceptional 3D solid modeling software expertise (SolidWorks preferred).
- Industry Background: Prior design exposure within tightly regulated sectors (Medical, Automotive, or Aerospace).
- Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with designing tooling targeting ISO 9001 and/or ISO 13485 cleanroom production runs.
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent required; Associate/Bachelor's degree in Plastics Engineering or Mechanical Design preferred.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills in English to detail engineering specifications.
- Interpersonal Strength: Strong ability to manage multiple tooling projects simultaneously, organize workflows, and resolve design logic conflicts.
- Visual Acuity: Acute visual capacity to inspect complex 3D part geometries, clearances, and structural features.
- Physical Capability: Ability to stand, bend, and move about the manufacturing floor and toolroom for up to 8 hours per day during mold tryouts.
