Full Job Description
Position Overview:

The Plasma Physicist - Edge and Boundary Specialist will aid in the analysis of our experimental campaigns, develop models that reconcile experimental results with simulation, and help to inform the direction of future development. As a member of the Applied Physics team, you will contribute to the development of our magnetized target fusion (MTF) power plant.

The ideal candidate is self-motivated, has strong communication skills and can stay focused on goals while operating in a fast-paced development environment. They would possess the drive required to work on difficult problems, are excited by alternative and innovative solutions, and are comfortable with working both independently and within a team.

The candidate should have significant experience in transport and material wall interactions in the edge and boundary regions surrounding a toroidal magnetically confined plasma.

Responsibilities:
  • Analyze and integrate diagnostic data from General Fusion plasma experiments to develop comprehensive hypotheses for evolution of plasma characteristics and reconcile them with simulation results and reconstructions.
  • Conduct computational analyses including modeling and simulation of the transport of impurities across the plasma edge and boundary region in comparison with experimental data.
  • Propose new experimental campaigns and corresponding simulations to answer key questions regarding plasma parameter evolution and optimization of MTF targets.
  • Curate and interpret experimental data.
  • Work with the simulation, reconstruction, and diagnostic teams to develop dynamic models of the boundary regions surrounding spherical tokamak (ST) plasmas under compression and their interaction with the material walls.
  • Communicate your results to both technical and non-technical audiences via in-person presentations and peer-reviewed papers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in plasma physics, fusion science, or closely related field
  • ~1-3 years relevant industry or post-doctoral experience preferred.
  • Strong background and experience in fusion science and magnetized plasma research.
  • Strong grasp of plasma theory. Must be able to apply relevant theory to develop models of the experimental system as well as to contribute to technological innovations.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Proven ability to work in a team setting.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage effectively with the team.
  • Experience and fluency in programming using Python, MATLAB, C++ or equivalent.
  • Experience in modeling the behavior of boundary region plasma, with existing plasma codes such as U-Edge, SOLPS.

The typical hiring range for this position is $121,000 - $142,000. General Fusion considers several factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills, and experience, proficiency, job location, and internal equity.

The work involved in this project combines a wide range of skill sets, and each team member will need to become familiar with the full scope of the experiment and understand how their work relates to the whole. General Fusion seeks individuals who are self-motivated, have good communication skills and are comfortable with creative problem solving independently and within a group.

What We Offer:

  • Hybrid work
  • Four weeks' vacation
  • Comprehensive benefits package.
  • RRSP contribution
  • Support for professional development
  • Great company culture - social events, food trucks, bike rides, Sun Run, etc.

Applications:

We thank all applicants for their interest, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

About General Fusion

General Fusion is developing fusion energy technology to generate clean, safe, and abundant energy. The company was founded in 2002 and is headquartered in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. General Fusion's technology uses a magnetized target fusion (MTF) approach, which involves creating a vortex of plasma and compressing it with a liquid metal. The resulting fusion reaction releases energy that can be harnessed to generate electricity. General Fusion has received funding from a variety of sources, including the Canadian government, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and the venture capital firm Khosla Ventures.
