The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) invites applications for the position of Physician Lead, Faculty Development. Reporting to the Dean and working in close collaboration with the Senior Advisor of Medical Education, the Physician Lead of Faculty Affairs, Faculty, and clinical leaders, the Physician Lead provides academic leadership in the establishment of faculty development structures, programming, and support within the Faculty of Medicine.

This role is central to building the capacity of academic and clinical faculty to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education at UPEI. The Physician Lead will foster collaboration among academic programs, clinical partners, community-based physicians, and health professionals to identify and address faculty development needs and support excellence in teaching, assessment, educational leadership, and scholarship.

As the Faculty of Medicine continues to establish and expand its educational programs, the Physician Lead will play a key role in developing and designing a faculty development plan that aligns with accreditation expectations, institutional priorities, and the evolving needs of UPEI's medical education programs. The Physician Lead will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education accreditation activities, including the design and implementation of faculty development initiatives required to support accreditation readiness and the ongoing establishment of sustainable faculty development structures and programming

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administration and Governance

• Provide academic leadership in the design, implementation, and evaluation of faculty development initiatives that support undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
• Lead the establishment of a comprehensive faculty development plan that supports faculty orientation, teaching, learner assessment, competency-based medical education, educational leadership, mentorship, and professional growth.
• Identify faculty development needs in collaboration with UGME, PGME, Faculty Affairs, program leadership, Provincial Department Heads, faculty, and clinical partners, and develop programming responsive to identified priorities.
• Develop, coordinate, and support the delivery of faculty development activities, including workshops, educational sessions, resources, and other learning opportunities for academic and clinical faculty.
• Support faculty in developing their roles as medical educators, including teaching, assessment, feedback, supervision, mentorship, and educational scholarship.
• Collaborate with UGME and PGME leadership to ensure faculty development activities support curriculum implementation, assessment systems, learner supervision, and program priorities.
• Contribute to UGME and PGME accreditation planning and preparation, including the development of faculty development strategies, activities, documentation, and evidence required to demonstrate alignment with applicable accreditation standards.
• Support distributed and community-based faculty by developing accessible and relevant faculty development opportunities responsive to the needs of physicians and other health professionals teaching across clinical learning environments.
• Collaborate with the Physician Lead, Faculty Affairs to support the integration of faculty development with faculty onboarding, engagement, recognition, leadership development, and academic progression.
• Promote and support educational scholarship and innovation in medical education, including opportunities for faculty participation in program evaluation, quality improvement, and dissemination of educational practices.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of policies, guidelines, resources, and processes related to faculty development and teaching excellence.
• Integrate social accountability, equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, anti-racism, anti-oppression, Indigenous health and reconciliation, and culturally safe educational practices within faculty development programming.
• Design, establish, and monitor approaches to evaluate faculty development activities, participation, needs, and outcomes, and use findings to support continuous quality improvement and future planning.
• Foster a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and excellence in medical education across the Faculty of Medicine.

Liaison & Collaboration

• The Physician Lead, Faculty Development collaborates broadly across the University, the Faculty of Medicine, and external clinical and professional partners to advance faculty development and strengthen teaching and educational capacity across the Faculty.
• Collaborate with the Physician Leads of Faculty Affairs, UGME, PGME, Social Accountability, Research, and other portfolios to ensure integration of faculty development across the educational continuum.
• Foster strong relationships with academic and clinical faculty, program leadership, Health PEI, community-based physicians and health professionals, and other partners to identify faculty development needs and support high-quality medical education across clinical learning environments.

Committee Responsibilities

• Participate in Faculty of Medicine and University governance structures and other committees as appropriate to the portfolio and as determined by the Dean.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A medical degree with certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), or equivalent.
• Member in good standing of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI.
• Membership in the Medical Society of Prince Edward Island (MSPEI).
• Appointees must maintain an active appointment to the medical staff of Health PEI (HPEI).
• Demonstrated leadership experience and/or advanced training in medical education, health systems, community engagement, or related fields preferred.
• Experience in faculty development within medical education, including the design, delivery, and evaluation of development programming.
• Demonstrated experience in teaching, assessment, and/or curriculum development in undergraduate or postgraduate medical education.
• Knowledge and understanding of social accountability, equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, cultural safety, and their application within medical education and faculty development
• Experience supporting faculty in educational roles through mentorship, coaching, or leadership development initiatives.
• Experience planning, coordinating, and evaluating faculty development activities, including workshops, training sessions, or educational events.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
• Understanding of accreditation frameworks, competency-based education, and faculty development principles.
