Additional Information About the Role

Join the BJH Institute of Health sterile compounding team, home to the largest sterile compounding suite at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

This highly specialized operation produces thousands of sterile preparations daily and operates under Missouri Board of Pharmacy oversight, including annual regulatory inspections. The suite features two non-hazardous buffer rooms, one hazardous buffer room, an integrated ISO 7 workgroup for inventory processing, automated compounding technology, and nine primary engineering controls. This role is ideal for a hands-on leader who enjoys solving complex operational challenges, optimizing systems and workflows, and maintaining the highest standards of sterile compounding quality and regulatory compliance. Sterile compounding experience is strongly preferred.

This leadership position is responsible for supervising daily sterile compounding operations, ensuring workflow efficiency and compliance, recruiting and training pharmacy staff, and supporting the professional growth of direct reports. The role also leads quality improvement initiatives through workflow analysis, data review, and PDSA projects, while conducting regulatory compliance audits such as CSP and SOP observations. Additional responsibilities include active participation in the BJC Sterile Compounding Committee and related subcommittees.

  • Mon - Fri
  • Days (Rotating start times between 4:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m)
  • Staffing expectations of 1-2 days per week
  • Weekend rotation: every 7-9 weekends


Preferred Qualifications

Role Purpose

Ensures the prompt and accurate preparation and dispensing of medications according to prescription orders from practitioners authorized by law to prescribe. Instructs, coordinates and monitors the work activities of staff to meet patient and customer needs in accordance with the rules and regulations for pharmacy operations.

Responsibilities
  • Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: hires, trains, assigns work, manages & evaluates performance, conducts professional development plans. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
  • Assists with pharmacy operations and integration with other departments.
  • Provides pharmaceutical care appropriate to the needs and age of the patients served.
  • Interprets patient data to identify, prevent, and resolve drug therapy problems and ensures safe and effective drug therapy.
  • Coordinates and reviews the work of Pharmacists, Technicians and Students.
  • Assists in development and enforcement of pharmacy policies and procedures in accordance with all hospital policies and governmental regulations
  • May participate in the development of departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets and having direct responsibility for adhering to those goals. This includes responding to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
