Summary

SUMMARY

The Pharmacist provides non-personal services to support the Indian Health Service (IHS) mission of raising the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health of American Indians and Alaska Natives to the highest level. Located at the Tsaile Health Center (THC) within the Chinle Service Unit (CSU), this role serves a rural population of approximately 11,000 patients, many of whom are traditional Navajo speakers.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver professional outpatient pharmacy services and direct patient care in accordance with recognized medical standards and CSU Medical Staff Bylaws.
  • Accurately document all care rendered using the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, ensuring records meet Joint Commission and CMS standards for timeliness, legibility, and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including Community Health Nurses and Social Workers, to coordinate patient management for medical and social needs.
  • Coordinate and integrate clinical information into the ongoing Health Care Program at the Service Unit and ensure timely follow-up care.
  • Participate in quality monitors and performance improvement efforts as assigned.

 

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Cultural Awareness: Demonstrated respect for American Indian and Alaska Native practices and traditions.
  • Communication: Ability to read, understand, speak, and write English effectively to communicate with patients and staff.
  • Technical Proficiency: Basic knowledge and skills required to navigate computer systems and electronic health record software.
  • Professional Conduct: Adherence to the Federal Code of Conduct and a high standard of ethical behavior.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of an accredited Pharmacy program.
  • Minimum of six (6) months of experience in the specialty.
  • No lapse in services of more than six consecutive months within the six months prior to beginning the assignment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY No supervisory work related to this position.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT Services are performed at the Tsaile Health Center Outpatient department and potentially other sites within the Chinle Service Unit as needed. The facility is a tobacco-free environment, and the use of tobacco products is strictly prohibited on IHS-operated properties.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS Typical for a clinical pharmacy setting, including standing for extended periods, walking between clinic areas, and the frequent use of computer terminals for electronic health records.

 

ROLE and LOCATION SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

  • Serving the Navajo Nation, which covers over 27,000 square miles across Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.
  • Potential for rotation into other duty sections (e.g., Teen Clinic or Urgent Care) or alternate sites within the Chinle Service Unit during emergencies.
  • Supporting community immunization events and public health initiatives within the region.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

  • Regular Schedule: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (40 hours per week).
  • Overtime: May be required to meet increased workload or patient care needs, typically not exceeding 2 additional hours per week.
  • Holidays: The facility is closed on Federal Holidays, and these hours are not compensated.

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS Occasional travel may be required to other healthcare facilities within the Chinle Service Unit to provide coverage or meet unplanned needs.

 

CLEARANCE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

  • Licensure: Current, valid, and unrestricted pharmacy license in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory.
  • DEA License: Valid, current, full, and unrestricted DEA license (Schedules II-V).
  • Certifications: Current BLS (Basic Life Support) is required; ACLS, PALS, and ATLS are highly recommended.
  • Background Checks: Must pass required Tier 1, 2, or 4 background investigations and provide fingerprints.
  • Mandatory Training: Completion of Information Systems Security Awareness (ISSA) and "Protecting Children from Sexual Abuse" training within 24 hours of reporting for duty.
  • Health Requirements: Documentation of immunity or vaccination for Hepatitis A/B, MMR, Varicella, Tdap, and annual Influenza, plus a current TB test.
