Job Description

The Staff Speech-Language Pathologist (Speech Pathologist 2) works with pediatric patients across the age
continuum - infants, children, adolescents - and from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds
providing both direct and indirect patient care services. Under general direction and upon receipt of written
referrals, the Staff Speech-Language Pathologist plans and administers a full range of speech therapy
services for patients with a variety of physical and cognitive impairments. Services include patient
evaluations using speech-language pathology tests and measurements, establishment of therapeutic
intervention goals and development of therapeutic intervention programs, and implementation of therapeutic
intervention plans utilizing all aspects of the speech-language pathology scope of practice.
The Staff Speech-Language Pathologist maintains all applicable patient records related to the delivery of
patient care services. While performing job duties, the Staff Speech-Language Pathologist may also
supervise support personnel including Rehabilitation Aides as well as Speech-Language Pathology students
and clinical fellows. The Staff Speech-Language Pathologist actively participates in departmental and
organizational programs, including quality and performance improvement activities, clinical education
programs, and inservices and staff development activities.

1. Performs speech-language pathology evaluations on referral by a licensed
provider and administers various neurological, dysphagia, cognitive-linguistic,
voice, and speech-language tests to determine a patient's functional limitations.
2. Establishes short- and long-term therapeutic goals based on results of the
evaluation and in consultation with the referring provider and caregiver/family.
3. Develops a therapeutic plan of care based on results of the evaluation and
established goals. Makes appropriate changes in therapeutic interventions based
on the patient's progress and performance

Administers direct patient care utilizing the full range of occupational therapy
techniques and methods within scope of practice and level of competence,
appropriate to the patient's goals and plan of care.
5. Delegates and supervises any part of the patient's therapeutic intervention which
can be legally and appropriately done by support staff.
6. Completes all aspects of discharge planning as appropriate.
7. Prepares and maintains accurate and timely patient care records as required by
policy and payer requirements, including services rendered, progress notes,
discharge notes, charges for services provided, and third-party payer reports (eg
CCS, Medi-Cal)
8. Communicates effectively and efficiently with patients, caregivers/families,
department staff, managers, and other clinical personnel.
9. Reports on patient progress at various rounds, clinics, and team conferences a

Demonstrates effective time management and organization skills.

Educational Responsibilities
1. Participates in staff inservice education programs, staff and team meetings.
2. Participates in orientation and training of new staff.
3. Participates in, and provides, programs to the community and other hospital
departments.
4. Participates in clinical precepting of affiliating speech-language pathology interns
and clinical fellows, and in departmental education activities related to students in
other health care professions (eg. Nursing, Medicine, Occupational Therapy).
5. Seeks appropriate opportunities for ongoing education and professional development.

Departmental Responsibilities
1. Participates in department quality assurance and performance improvement
activities.
2. Contributes to the goals of the department by participating in special projects,
committees, etc

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Masters degree with clinical fellowship
  o If graduated 15 or more years ago, a bachelor's degree
• Minimum one year of patient care experience.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to recognize signs of distress.
• Basic computer skills including work within Epic electronic medical record.
• Possession of good interpersonal, time management, problem solving and self-initiation skills.
• This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
• Pediatric OP Speech and Language Assessment and Treatment clinical experience.

• PREFERRED QUALIFICATION
• Minimum one year of licensed experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist working with pediatric
  populations.
• Prior speech pathology experience in an academic medical center environment.
• Prior experience working on an interdisciplinary health provider team.
• Current Pediatric FEES and/or MBSS competence
  
  REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
• Possession of or proven eligibility for licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board of California.
• Possession of or proven eligibility for CPR certification.
• Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Assessment and Treatment, skills to perform pediatric Modified Barium Swallow Studies.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
