Responsibilities

The successful applicant will join the Section of Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics comprised of developmental pediatricians, pediatric physiatrists/rehabilitation medicine specialists, child psychiatrists, psychologists, and pediatric nurse practitioners, in providing interdisciplinary care for children with a variety of developmental disabilities and rehabilitation needs.

The primary clinical responsibilities are outpatient and inpatient pediatric rehabilitation medicine (PRM) care for children with congenital and acquired neurologic, musculoskeletal, and developmental disabilities at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital (GRH) and Stollery Children's Hospital. These include procedural pain and tone management, and participation in the on-call rotation covering the inpatient physiatry consultation service and the pediatric intrathecal baclofen program.

The pediatric physiatrist will also collaborate in team-based subspecialty outpatient clinics and services, which include:
  • Physical Medicine / Orthopedic Treatment Clinics
  • Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Consultation Clinics
  • Pediatric Brain Injury Program
  • Spina Bifida Clinic
  • Tone Management Service for Children
  • Tertiary pediatric and adult transition clinics
  • EMG/NCS Lab
  • Instrumented motion analysis


Additional Information:

The Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital offers inpatient and outpatient assessment, treatment and interprofessional services for children with neurodevelopmental, cognitive, motor, and rehabilitation needs. In a family-centered environment, children are cared for by a comprehensive team of allied professionals. A group of pediatricians, family physicians, pediatric physiatrists, and developmental pediatricians provide medical coverage for outpatient specialty clinics and consultation service for a 10-bed tertiary Pediatric Intensive Rehabilitation Inpatient program (24-hour care). The Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital is home to active education and research programs providing opportunities and mentorship for academic pursuits.

In addition to clinical care, the section is active in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. It hosts a fully accredited Developmental Pediatrics subspecialty-training program through the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and a clinical fellowship in Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to apply for a clinical academic appointment with the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta. There are opportunities for both classroom-based and clinical teaching as well as for developing skills in medical education.

Qualifications:

Interested applicants must hold an MD with Canadian Royal College specialist certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

The ideal candidate will have experience in pediatric physiatry/pediatric rehabilitation medicine, demonstrating clinical excellence and a commitment to advancing patient care through quality improvement, program development, teaching, and innovation. Preference will be given to those specialists with post-graduate training in Pediatric Physiatry / Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine, CSCN EMG Diplomate designation, and pediatric EMG experience.
