JOB DESCRIPTION

A pathologist with at least 5 years of experience and may serve as a subject matter expert to their peers and/or serve in leadership roles for various initiatives.  Provide professional oversight and direction of clinical pathology services including quality assurance functions.  May handle certain delegated laboratory director duties.  


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Fulfill the responsibilities as listed in CLIA ‘88 (42 C.F.R. 493.1495). Additional responsibilities may be defined by applicable laws and regulations. 
  • Fulfill the responsibilities that have been reapportioned by the Laboratory/Medical Director as detailed in CLIA 2 (42 CFR 493.1407). Additional responsibilities may be defined by applicable laws and regulations. 
  • If applicable, perform review of anatomicpathology patient samples and quality control and assurance documents. 
  • If applicable, perform review of clinical pathology results and quality control and assurance documents. 
  • Participate in departmental professional QualityControl and Quality Assurance activities,e.g.Pathologist Competency Assessment Program. 
  • Interact with ordering physicians who request to speak with a pathologist. 
  • Comply with all Quest Diagnostics policies including but not limited to the following: 
    • Observe all policies in 2Your Compliance Policy Handbook2 
    • Obtain the minimum Continuing Medical Education credits as required by current policy entitled 2Professional Benefits/Continuing Education PolicyA0ForPhysicians2 
    • Adhere to existing and new Standard Operating Procedures and Policies as issued by the Best Practice Teams and local business unit, including any standards that exceed the minimum requirements of federal,stateand local laws and regulations. 
    • Assist Quest Diagnostics in assuringthat applicable Quest Diagnostics policies as well as federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations concerning health and safety are met. 
  • Cooperate with other Quest Diagnostics initiatives and programs that may arise from time to time such as the following: 
    • Serve on Quest Diagnostics2 Best Practice Teams, Six SigmaTeamsor other specific committees and to participate in and/or direct special projects to meet the professional and business goals of Quest Diagnostics. 
    • Maintain timely contact with pathologists and other physicians and scientists, to be responsive to their needs, and to respond in a timely manner to their requests for consultation concerning test methodology and clinical correlation of Quest Diagnostics testing services. 
    • Assist in any special project such as test method validation, reference range standardization,safetyand quality assurance. 
    • Assist Quest Diagnostics in professional liaison with professional societies concerned with clinical laboratorymedicine.  This includes professional medical associations, governmental agencies, and other regulatory bodies concerned with the nature and scope of clinical laboratory business. 
  • This position reports to the Quest Diagnostics Medical Director responsible for the laboratory or reports to an Associate Director Pathologist.

Required WorkExperience: 

  1. Pathologists who will be providing professional services within the United States or United States territories must meet subsections a-d as applicable: (job offers will be made contingent on obtaining board certification within first year of employment)
    1. Meet the qualifications as listed in CLIA 1 as applicable to intended job duties [see: 42 C.F.R. 493.1449(a)(b) and/or (k) for cytology, and/or (l) for histopathology]
    2. Must be certified by the American Board of Pathology (or equivalency for osteopathic pathologists) in the specialty of Anatomic Pathology (or combined Anatomic/Clinical Pathology) within the original period of eligibility of examination if expected to performAnatomic Pathology duties.
    3. Must be certified by the American Board of Pathology (or equivalency for osteopathic pathologists) in the specialty of Clinical Pathology (or combined Anatomic/Clinical Pathology) within the original period of eligibility if expected to perform Clinical Pathology duties.
    4. Must be certified by the American Board of Dermatology or Pathology (or equivalency for osteopathic physicians) in the specialty of Dermatopathology within the original period of eligibility if hired as a credentialedDermatopathologist.1
  2. Pathologists who practice outside of the United States and its territories must meet the applicable regulatory requirements and demonstrate proficiency through processes equivalent to American Board of Pathology certification that are available in the country in which he or she is employed.
  3. Must be a physician qualified to assume professional, scientific, consultative, organizational, administrative, and educational responsibility for the services offered by the laboratory.
  4. Active unrestricted medical licensure for the state, territory, or country where the business unit is located (joboffers will be made contingent on obtaining active licensure).
  5. Successful completion of the Quest Diagnostics Medical Staff Credentialing process (job offers will be made contingent on acceptable review):
    1. Verification of Education/Degree
    2. Verification of State (or applicable) Medical License
    3. Verification of Board Certification
    4. Check of the (United States) National Practitioners' Database and review of claims against the pathologist (at the discretion of Credentialing Committee).
  6. Employee and Contract Applicants must successfully pass an anatomic pathology slide test examination.
  7. At least 5 years of prior experience in an inpatient and/or outpatient laboratory setting is required, OR Board Certification in a subspecialty area within Clinical or Anatomic Pathology that is pertinent to the job position.
  8. Demonstrated one or more of the following abilities:
    1. proactive engagement with clients and ability to build customer relations
    2. regularly consulted by peers as a local subject matter expert
    3. regular participation in departmental management activities or leadership role indepartmental educational activities
    4. active participation in external professional activities such as publishing, educational presentations, panel discussions, etc.
