Packaging Engineer II

Purpose and Scope/General Summary: We are looking for a Packaging Engineer II to join our R&D team here at Pilgrim's in Greeley, CO! As a Packaging Engineer II for Pilgrim's and JBS Prepared Foods, you will work with the R&D team located in beautiful Northern Colorado to develop and deliver innovative packaging and support quality management across our North American production network. You will also own execution of foundational packaging support for this fast paced, exciting, and growing business. This Packaging Engineer II is responsible for providing support in the areas of design, development, testing and production scale-up of new packaging components and systems. The individual provides packaging direction for new product development and operations while collaborating with research and development peers, category, brand, supply chain, procurement and other affiliated departments to identify and address packaging needs. This includes: validating new materials and suppliers, establishing packaging specifications, collaboration with external vendors, identifying areas for improvement, managing documentation for compliance, change management ownership, and resolving issues.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development and assessment of the following information to support package development, including but not limited to: design requirements, definition of the scope of change, packaging and equipment solution proposals, process gap assessments, risk assessments, test plans, and test results analysis and conclusions.
  • Plan and execute production line trials and qualification tests at plants for packaging components and platforms, making observations, documenting procedures and results, and documenting conclusions
  • Identify and lead packaging initiatives in cost optimization and sustainability

Troubleshoot critical to quality packaging attributes through root cause analysis of technical issues and manufacturing processes
  • Lead troubleshooting and problem-solving efforts related to quality and optimization issues at production sites, supporting decisions through analysis and data.
  • Collaborate cross functionally to provide technical insight and keep key stakeholders updated
  • Create and manage packaging specifications and BOM reviews
  • Work in conjunction with and is a packaging consultant for cross functional teams
  • Engage with suppliers to support plant operations teams
  • Manage and fulfill administrative packaging requests (SAP, IPS)
  • Visits plants to execute projects and conduct process evaluations
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in packaging engineering or related engineering fields strongly preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in packaging quality management and development required
  • Able to analyze problems and define solutions
  • Experience with packaging equipment and is comfortable troubleshooting material/machine issues
  • Experience engaging with and obtaining results from material and equipment suppliers
  • Knowledge of label substrates, films, corrugated, folding carton, laminations, printing techniques and processes, pallets, and artwork/graphics development
  • Knowledge of packaging software (ArtiosCAD and CAPE or TOPS)
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, creative problem-solving, and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and effectively
  • Proactive self-starter, capable of working independently and cross-functionally with minimal supervision and direction in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to travel up to 50% to plant locations.

  • Benefits: Vision, Medical, and Dental coverage begin after 60 days of employment;
  • Paid Time Off: sick leave, vacation, and 6 company observed holidays;
  • 401(k): company match begins after the first year of service and follows the company vesting schedule;
  • Base salary range of $80,000-$100,000
  • Incentive Pay: This position is eligible to participate in the Company's annual bonus plan, the amount of bonus varies and is subject to the standard terms and conditions of the incentive program; and
