POSITION TITLE: Head Principal

LOCATION: Brooke High School
QUALIFICATIONS: A valid West Virginia Principal Certification PK-AD, as established by the West Virginia Department of Education.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Successful administrative experience
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely with correct grammar and/or spelling
  • Ability to manage effectively a program of student behavior at a high school
  • Knowledge/experience preparing a school schedule and duty schedules
  • Knowledge of-curriculum development
  • Knowledge of the current trends and research to increase student achievement


  • Knowledge of assessing the needs of a school, evaluating the effectiveness of school practices, developing school improvement plans, setting goals, and establishing policies to manage day-to-day decisions
  • Ability to utilize test data analysis to improve learning, confidence, and morale


  • Ability to establish effective working relationship among administration, teachers, and parents to improve learning, confidence, and morale for students, parents, and teachers


  • Knowledge/experience utilizing West Virginia Department of Education Internet Access System Knowledge/experience utilizing West Virginia Education Information System
  • Ability to work with community groups and/or agencies to coordinate appropriate student services
  • Ability to write school goals and objectives following county-specified criteria format
  • Any combination of training and experience which would lead to successful employment as the head Principal


  • Willing to attend the West Virginia Principal's Academy or have attended the West Virginia Principal 's Academy


1. Responsible for the overall administration of the school
2. Responsible for the development of Unified School Improvement Plan in compliance with West Virginia Board of Education Policies
3. Responsible for developing curriculum and planning courses of study
4. Responsible for arranging the master teaching schedule and any special assignments that may be needed
5. Responsible for staff meetings and department head meetings, assigning staff responsibilities, analyzing school personnel needs and arranging for staff development training
6. Responsible for preparing, allocating, and managing a school and student activities budget
7. Appoint and oversee school committees/organizations. This includes, but is not limited to, School Curriculum Team, Faculty Senate, Local School Improvement Council, Parent/Teacher Association.
8. Oversee the evaluation and counseling of staff members regarding their individual and group performances
9. Organize and attend special events held to recognize student achievement and attend school sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events as directed by the Superintendent or his designee
10. Responsible for scheduling supervision of student traffic throughout the building and on the school grounds
11. Oversee the discipline throughout the student body and deal with special cases as necessary
12. Oversee the reporting and monitoring of student attendance; work with the Attendance Director and other appropriate community agencies
13. Responsible for conducting safety inspections and safety drill activities
14. Oversee the administration of school and county policies, as directed, in a manner consistent with procedures to be followed by high school Assistant Principals
15. Aid parent, faculty, and student groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities and objectives
16. Perform record keeping functions as required by the Superintendent or his designee
17. Recommend, assign and work with department heads and school staff as directed by the Superintendent or his designee
18. Assume responsibility for coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services as directed by the Superintendent or designee
19. Maintain effective working relationship with Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and Directors
20. Responsible for instructional leadership and support within the school building
21. Create a safe climate conducive to teaching and learning
22. Implement a system to monitor student progress as required by Individual Education Plans(IEP)
23. Maintain good public and employee relations
24. Evaluate personnel under your supervision as directed by the Superintendent or designee
25. Maintain professional work habits
26. Maintain and upgrade his/her professional skills
27. Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline as necessary, according to due process rights of students
28. Responsible for school fiscal responsibilities
29. Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, or appointed designee

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 261 days. Salary based on Brooke County Teacher Salary Schedule and supplemental Principals' index.
EVALUATION: By immediate supervisor, using Brooke County Board of Education's Policy of Evaluation of Professional Employees
