THE POSITIONKeyera is seeking an
Operational Risk Engineer to support our Terminals & Pipelines operations within the Operations Engineering team. This role plays a critical part in identifying, evaluating, prioritizing, and mitigating operational risks and is based in Keyera's Sherwood Park Regional Office.
RESPONSIBILITIESOperational Risk Management & Risk Register Oversight
- Lead and support the identification, evaluation, and mitigation of operational risks using structured methodologies such as HAZOP, LOPA, PHAs, and other risk assessment tools.
- Develop, maintain, and continuously improve Site Operational Risk Registers, ensuring risks are appropriately ranked, tracked, and addressed.
- Align all operational risk management activities with Keyera's Operational Excellence Management System.
- Promote consistent risk identification, documentation, and closure across terminals and pipelines.
- Actively participate in the management of change (MOC) process in conjunction with facility stakeholders.
- Collaborate with vendors, engineering firms, and subject matter experts to solve problems and resolve design issues.
Risk Assessment, Reporting & Assurance
- Maintain and execute Risk Assessment Plans for operational assets, including coordination of baseline and revalidation PHAs.
- Prepare and present operational risk reports.
- Support internal assurance activities such as OEMS self-assessments, audits, and regulatory reviews related to operational risk management.
- Contribute to budgeting and planning for engineering actions arising from risk assessments.
Incident Investigation & Continuous Improvement
- Participate in incident investigations as required, providing risk-based insights, recommendations, and follow-up action planning.
- Identify opportunities to enhance risk management processes, tools, and practices across terminals and pipelines.
Coaching, Collaboration & Culture
- Coach and mentor operations engineers, asset teams, and frontline staff on risk identification, hazard mitigation, and process safety best practices.
- Support training initiatives and promote a proactive, risk-aware culture across operations.
- Stay current with industry standards and emerging risk management practices.
QUALIFICATIONS- Bachelor's degree in chemical, Mechanical, or equivalent Engineering discipline.
- P. Eng. designation in Alberta (or eligibility) is preferred.
- 5-15 years of experience in operations engineering, process safety, operational risk management, or engineering within the energy, terminals, or pipeline sector.
- Knowledge of Midstream and Downstream facilities, Rail/Truck and Tank Terminals, and Pipeline Operations is preferred for this role.
- Strong working knowledge of risk assessment frameworks, including HAZOP, LOPA, PHAs, and operational risk registries.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing effective risk mitigation strategies in complex operating environments.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organization, and analytical skills.
- Familiarity with current acts and regulations (ABSA, ASME B31.3 and Section VIII, CSA Z662, etc.).
- Comfortable working in both office and field environments, with a proactive, self-directed approach.
