Summary

We are seeking an experienced OpenRoads Designer to join our Water Resources team and support the delivery of roadway drainage, stormwater, and utility infrastructure projects. In this role, you will lead the design and production of complex engineering plans and models, applying engineering principles and industry best practices to develop solutions for municipal, county, and transportation agency clients.

The ideal candidate has advanced experience with Bentley OpenRoads Designer and OpenRoads Drainage & Utilities and enjoys collaborating with multidisciplinary teams while mentoring junior staff and supporting project delivery from concept through final design. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and production of roadway drainage, stormwater, and utility infrastructure projects.
  • Lead, manage, mentor and train a small team of junior designers.
  • Develop OpenRoads models, construction plans, profiles, cross-sections, and engineering details.
  • Design storm sewer systems, culverts, channels, detention facilities, and utility improvements associated with transportation projects.
  • Perform and apply engineering calculations related to drainage, grading, and utility design under the direction of a licensed engineer.
  • Coordinate with roadway, transportation, utility, structural, and environmental teams to deliver integrated project solutions.
  • Prepare quantity calculations, cost estimates, and supporting design documentation.
  • Provide QA/QC reviews to ensure compliance with client, municipal, and DOT standards.
  • Assist with resource planning, project scheduling, and identifying scope changes or project risks.
  • Support the continuous improvement of design standards, workflows, and software applications.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, Design Technology, Applied Science, or a related field; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 6+ years of experience supporting transportation, water resources, drainage, or utility design projects.
  • Advanced proficiency in Bentley OpenRoads Designer (ORD), OpenRoads Drainage & Utilities (ORD D&U), and MicroStation.
  • Experience developing roadway drainage and utility designs for municipal or transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of stormwater management, utility coordination, and construction plan development.
  • Familiarity with applicable DOT, municipal, and agency design standards.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
  • Experience supporting projects for TxDOT other transportation agencies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with StormCAD, SewerGEMS, OpenFlows, HEC-RAS, InfoWorks ICM, or similar drainage software.
  • Experience mentoring junior technical staff and leading design production efforts.
