Job Description
This position is the unit manager for the Occupational Health and Injury Surveillance Unit within the Environmental Health Bureau (EHB). It operates to the standard of best available science and public health practice for the purpose of protecting the people of Michigan as required in the Michigan Public Health Code. The employee functions as a first-line professional manager of professional positions in a complex work area with professional staff who conduct surveillance activities pertaining to occupational health and injury. They interface with other units and sections in the department to provide data, evaluation, findings, public health determinations, and expertise on occupational injuries and illnesses, and on injuries overall, including unintentional (accidental), assault/homicide, and intentional self-harm/suicide. They oversee a staff of epidemiologists.

This position builds collaborative partnerships for the purpose of the public health assurance function so that MDHHS findings and recommendations are considered and addressed. The person in this position works cooperatively with Michigan State University Occupational and Environmental Medicine Program and Michigan's Occupational Safety and Health Program to address public health impacts on the people of Michigan from their work environment. This position works with other federal, state, and local health and regulatory agencies for the same purpose outlined above. They interact with the public, local officials, and legislators via meetings, telephone conversations, and e-mails, responding to community health concerns and providing information to protect public health. This position requires knowledge of MDHHS policies and procedures and advanced knowledge of epidemiological and statistical methods. This position ensures that the best available science is applied to sample design, data collection, data analysis, and technical report writing to investigate occupational health outcomes and other types of injuries in Michigan.
This unit can also provide skilled professional epidemiological surge capacity for other divisions in the bureau in the event of public health emergencies such as COVID-19. This role is critical to preserving the health, safety, and welfare of the residents of Michigan.

Required Education and Experience

Education
Possession of a master's degree in epidemiology or public health with a minimum of 8 semester (12 term) graduate-level hours in epidemiology and biostatistics courses.
Experience
Four years of professional experience equivalent to an Epidemiologist, including three years equivalent to an Epidemiologist P11, two years equivalent to an Epidemiologist 12, or one year equivalent to an Epidemiologist Manager 13 or Epidemiologist Specialist 13.

Position Location/Remote Office: The physical location of this position is 333 South Grand Avenue, Lansing, MI 48933. Based on operational needs and within established limits, remote work and alternate or hybrid work schedule requests for this position may be considered. Selected candidates who have been approved to work remotely or a hybrid schedule must complete that work within Michigan. Candidates should confirm work location and schedule at the time of interview.

Employees will be provided computers to perform state work. Phones may also be provided for necessary communications. If working remotely, employees will be responsible for providing other components of a remote office at their own expense, including:
