Job Summary

The Duke Smoking Cessation Program is seeking a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to provide outpatient telehealth care for adolescents and adults requiring tobacco use treatment. The APP will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to deliver direct patient care under the supervision of the Program's Medical Director.

This position offers 100% remote work after an initial training period (approximately 30-90 days), contingent on continued alignment with Program needs and Duke expectations. The employee must demonstrate the ability to meet performance standards in a remote environment. Following orientation, the employee will also attend on-site meetings approximately six times per year.

During the first 30 days, work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. After orientation, available shift options are either:

  • Monday-Thursday, 10:30 AM to 9:00 PM, or
  • Monday-Friday, 12:30 PM to 9:00 PM


Administrative time is scheduled on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the first four hours of the shift.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical:
  • Record details of pertinent history, history of smoking-related illnesses, past medical, family and social history, surgical history and planned surgeries.
  • Establish and develop treatment plan (in conjunction with Supervising Physician as needed)
  • Prescribe appropriate medications
  • Work closely with behavioral health and social work to address additional psychiatric and social barriers to smoking cessation.
  • Patient and family teaching as appropriate
  • Order appropriate labs, radiologic tests and procedures and follow up with patient as needed
  • Coordinate care and refer to other medical professionals as needed
  • Document clinic, telehealth, and other patient encounters in the Epic (Maestro) system
  • Review outside records including clinic notes, hospital records, outside imaging, lab, and other test results

Research:
  • Participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by the supervising physician
  • Liaise with members of the clinical research team to identify patients for research purposes
  • Participate in enrollment of patients in clinical research studies

Education:
  • May make work assignments for assigned nursing and technical personnel; review the work of other staff; train new personnel.
  • Participate in teaching medical students, nursing students, physician assistant students, and other health professionals in techniques and procedures which are unique to specific clinical setting.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Job Eligibility Requirements

Education
  • Nurse Practitioners:Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Physician Assistants:Work requires completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.


Certification
  • BLS required.


License
  • Nurse Practitioners:Must have current or compact RN licensure & NP approval to practice in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required.
  • Physician Assistants:Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. BLS required.
  • DEA licensure with full prescriptive authority required.


Experience
  • 1+ years of APP experience preferred
