Duke University Hospital Inpatient Hematologic Malignancy and Cellular Therapy

Job Summary

The Hematologic Malignancy and Cellular Therapy (HMCT) Advanced Practice Provider works in collaboration with attending physicians, collects and documents data, obtains/orders diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, laboratory studies and professional consultations to provide direct patient care services for HMCT inpatient services. This position will split time between our two services 50/50.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Promote and maintain high standards of patient care throughout the continuum of cancer diagnosis.
  • Elicit detailed and accurate patient histories and perform through physical examinations.
  • Order appropriate diagnostic imaging and tests to determine medical and post treatment diagnoses, patient conditions, treatment toxicities.
  • Formulate appropriate treatment plans with critical thinking skills and high-level clinical judgement including prescribing appropriate medications.
  • Chart patient progress maintaining detailed and accurate health records
  • Participate in clinical research projects and understand the importance of documentation of toxicities and data collection.
  • Communication among multi-disciplinary teams to support patient care.
  • Collaborating, supporting and building strong relationships with supervising, back-up supervising physicians, APP colleagues, and team members.
  • Participate in education of patients, family members, new staff, students and other learners.
  • Perform procedures including:
    • Bone Marrow Biopsies
    • Lumbar Puncture with and without intrathecal chemotherapy
    • Ommaya Access with and without intrathecal chemotherapy
    • Punch skin biopsy with simple suture.
  • See scheduled and unscheduled patients.
  • Attend program required meetings.
  • Maintain up to date clinical and professional knowledge via approved CME.
  • Protect patient confidentiality, maintain ethics and abide by North Carolina laws and Duke Health System policies.
  • Maintain institutional requirements for compliance.


Job Eligibility Requirements

Education

NP: Graduate of accredited MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner Program for adult care

PA: Graduate of ARC accredited Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree Physician Assistant Program

Certification

NP: Any NP certification that treats adults (FNP, ANP, AGNP, AGPCNP, AGACNP, etc.)

PA: PA-C

Both: BLS

ACLS preferred

Licensure

NP: Must have unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as a NP

PA: Must have unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as PA

Both: Federal and State DEA independent license with unrestricted prescriptive authority

Experience

APP experience is preferred, ideally in Hematology/Oncology, but recent or new grads graduating by December 2025 are welcome to apply.

Job Hours

Monday through Sunday includes Weekends and Holidays 12- hour day shift 7A-7P. 14 shifts per month
