Job Overview:

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions as an independent care provider in collaboration with the Neurosurgery Department, delivering comprehensive, evidence-based care across the continuum of patient management

The APP is responsible for conducting thorough health assessments, formulating differential diagnoses, and managing patients with acute and chronic neurosurgical conditions

The APP performs comprehensive clinical evaluations, monitors patient progress, and ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality care while promoting optimal patient outcomes

Job Qualifications:

Education Required:
  • Masters or Doctoral degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  • Current, active New Jersey Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) license with prescriptive authority, or current, active New Jersey Physician Assistant (PA) license and registration through the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners
  • Current national certification as a Nurse Practitioner (AANP or ANCC) or certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)

Experience Preferred:
  • Previous experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in an acute care setting is preferred but not required
  • Candidates with limited experience must demonstrate strong clinical knowledge, effective communication skills, a commitment to lifelong learning, and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team

Certification(s):
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required

Job Responsibilities:

1) Provide comprehensive inpatient neurosurgical care, including the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of patients with acute and chronic neurosurgical conditions

2) Order, interpret, and communicate laboratory, radiologic, and diagnostic test results to guide clinical decision making

3) Manage neurosurgical drains, including external ventricular drains (EVDs), lumbar drains, subdural evacuating port system (SEPS), Subgaleal/subdural drains, and other cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion systems in accordance with institutional protocols and provider privileges

4) Perform bedside procedures within the scope of practice and credentialing, including lumbar punctures, drain removal, suture and staple removal, wound care, and placement of sutures when clinically indicated

5) Prepare patients for surgical intervention by coordinating preoperative evaluations, reviewing required imaging and diagnostic studies, obtaining medical clearances and completing preoperative orders

6) Assist in the operating room as delegated and within the APP s scope of practice

7) Provide comprehensive postoperative management, including pain control, wound assessment, drain management, neurological monitoring, and coordination of discharge planning and follow-up care

8) Evaluate new inpatient, emergency department, and transfer consultations; perform comprehensive history and physical examinations; develop differential diagnoses; and initiate appropriate diagnostic and treatment plans,

9) Attend daily multidisciplinary rounds, document comprehensive progress notes, monitor patient status, and adjust treatment plans as clinically indicated

10) Complete discharge planning, medication reconciliation, discharge summaries, prescriptions, patient education, and coordination of post-discharge services to ensure safe transition of care

11) Collaborates with Stroke, Epilepsy, Neurosurgery, Neurocritical Care, Rehabilitation, Hospital Medicine, Nursing, and other multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes, care transitions, and discharge planning,

12) Participates in quality improvement initiatives, evidence-based practice, development of clinical workflows, and neuroscience service line initiatives as organizational needs evolve,

13 )May other duties as assigned or directed by management
