KEY FUNCTION:

Support the delivery of quality patient care and excellence in professional and clinical nursing practice. Provide leadership by promoting, developing and implementing evidence-based practice. Act as a role model in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario Professional Standards and HSNs Mission, Vision, and Values in both formal and informal learning environments.

REPORTING:

Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Cardiac Inpatient.

DUTIES:
  1. Foster a positive learning environment; provide guidance and support the ongoing education of staff.
  2. Develop, implement and evaluate staff development/orientation programs based on learning needs, clinical practice standards, treatment trends, technical changes, certification requirements and relevant research findings.
  3. Provide/deliver educational programs/content offering mentorship through clinical expertise to new nurses and through continuing education opportunities.
  4. Conduct education needs assessment for the purpose of targeted education strategies and program-based learner needs.
  5. Organize educational opportunities for nursing staff based on HSN's strategic plan and education needs identified by the Program Director, Clinical Managers, Nurse Clinicians and Unit Nurses.
  6. Structure education and incorporate principles of adult education, in a creative way, to promote maximum participation and learning.
  7. Evaluate activities and outcomes with evaluations and audits.
  8. Provide constructive feedback to assist staff in improving their performance.
  9. Check and adjust quality improvement process in the education program to ensure content is current and evidenced-based.
  10. Facilitate and provide assistance in the development of unit-specific programs, plans of care, standards of care, clinical pathways, etc. to assist with the delivery of quality patient care.
  11. Provide leadership in the design and implementation of patient, family and staff teaching and education programs.
  12. Address professional practice issues within the nursing profession.
  13. Support health care students in the clinical setting.
  14. Work collaboratively with other clinicians to revise clinical orientation programs based on evaluations and/or policies, procedures and protocol updates and develop new education initiatives for orientation programs as required.
  15. Network and maintain linkages with external stakeholders, including clinical experts/educators in academic centres and the healthcare community regarding nursing education, practice and professional development.
  16. Maintain clinical knowledge and competency, with emphasis on clinical specialty.
  17. Maintain knowledge of current research relating to nursing specialty and collaborate in the research process as required.
  18. Identify and introduce clinically significant research findings to members of patient care team and program.
  19. Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  20. Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
  21. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN's Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  22. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  23. Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  24. Participate on various committees and in meetings as required.
  25. Perform other duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
  1. Minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing BSc(N) from an accredited university.
  2. Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  3. Master's Degree of Science in Nursing or actively pursuing a Master's is preferred.
  4. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate is required.
  5. Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required.
  6. Current Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate is required.
  7. Unit-specific certification, training and education is required.
  8. Ministry of Labour "Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps" training certificate is required.


EXPERIENCE:
  1. Minimum of five (5) years, full-time equivalent clinical Cardiology experience, within the last eight (8) years.
  2. Minimum of two (2) years recent, relevant teaching experience of clinical adult education programs or equivalent.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  1. Demonstrated expertise as an educator using the principles of adult learning.
  2. Demonstrated coaching and mentoring skills.
  3. Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and evaluate clinical education methodologies and assessment instruments.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the relevant acts, regulations, legislation and standards related to Occupational Health and Safety in the hospital setting.
  5. Demonstrated flexibility and effectiveness in dealing with colleagues, supervisors, and employees; awareness and consideration of the needs and motives of others.
  6. Demonstrated ability to effectively motivate and lead staff to work as an effective team to accomplish optimum results.
  7. Demonstrated strong organization skills with the ability to manage a diversified workload, rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
  8. Demonstrated high levels of initiative, self-direction and an innovative approach to problem solving.
  9. Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of quality improvement methodology for process improvement.
  10. Demonstrated skills in organizing resources, analyzing and solving problems, establishing priorities and making evaluative judgements.
  11. Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software, (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Teams), SharePoint and patient information systems (e.g., Meditech).
  12. Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  13. Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  14. Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
