The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Provides anesthesia service to patients at the Strong Memorial Hospital.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Under overall direction and within limits prescribed by professional policies, codes and ethics:

- Performs pre-anesthesia patient interview and evaluates patient's condition including a review of medical history and physical examinations, laboratory, x-ray, ECG reports, nurses records, previous hospitalization records and anesthetics, including a history of anesthesia problems of family members.

- Determines the need for timely administration of indicated medications and supportive therapy such as fluids, blood, etc., pre-operatively in addition to anticipated requirements during surgery and requests additional medical examination or consultation when indicated.

- Assembles supplies and equipment for anesthetic cases, checking same for safety and proper function. Discusses the anesthetics, drugs and techniques to be used or any other situation relevant to the anesthesia with the anesthesiologist, surgeon and/or obstetrician when indicated.

- Helps position patient properly on operating table; applies, attaches and/or inserts devices for monitoring vital signs and establishes baseline vital signs.

- Performs technical procedures: veni-puncture, arterial puncture, laryngoscopy, oral or nasal intubation (before or after induction of anesthesia as indicated to insure airway maintenance.

- Induces and maintains anesthesia/analgesia at a required safe level and monitors support life junctions during the administration of anesthesia. Detects and manages untoward reactions to anesthesia agents and other drugs used during surgery. Requests anesthesiology consultant when required.

- Observes and informs the surgeon of changes in patient's condition as circumstances warrant and institutes resuscitative measures in support of and restorative to the health of the patient.

- Accompanies patient to the recovery room and informs the nurse assuming responsibility for the patient's care during anesthesia emergence and in the immediate post-operative recovery period of all essential data necessary for the patient's optimal recovery.

- Visits the patient post-operatively and notes any untoward reactions or complications attributable to the anesthesia. Follows up as required.

- Maintains accurate, neat, legible and complete anesthesia record.

- Inspects anesthesia and ancillary equipment for health and safety hazards; maintains adequate supplies of equipment and is cognizant of the techniques and quality of cleaning and sterilizing of anesthesia supplies and equipment.

- Provides emergency resuscitative care in all areas of the hospital.

- Pursues professional growth and increased knowledge through the continuing education opportunities available, e.g., attendance at educational meetings, conferences and work-shops sponsored by the Anesthesia Societies and Associations at the national, state, regional and local levels. Attends departmental in-hospital seminars as often as possible. Keeps abreast of current concepts and techniques through journals.

REQUIREMENTS:

Graduate of an approved school of nursing with a current license to practice in New York State; graduate of a school of nurse anesthesia, accredited by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (Dept. of H.E.W. authorized accrediting agent). Current A.A.N.A. membership, active practicing category. (Possession of above is proof that the applicant has passed the national qualifying examination and received initial certification-C.R.N.A.; and is in compliance with the on-going specific requirements for continuing professional education to maintain certification.
