Summary

The Duke Energy Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) department is seeking an Engineer to support the Risk-Informed Capital Initiatives team. This position supports strategic initiatives and implementation of risk-informed applications across the nuclear fleet. The candidate will work with experienced engineers and cross-functional teams to help develop, maintain, and deploy risk-informed decision-making tools and processes that enhance safety, optimize operations, and support regulatory compliance.

Candidates must perform engineering work with limited supervision, apply established engineering principles and practices, and contribute technical analysis and documentation in assigned areas of specialization. Incumbents are expected to manage assigned tasks, support project deliverables, and seek guidance for complex or non-routine issues as appropriate.

Responsibilities
  • Support development and implementation of strategic risk-informed applications and initiatives across the nuclear fleet, including Risk Informed Completion Times, Surveillance Frequency Control Program, 10 CFR 50.69 categorizations, and development of Alternative Treatments.
  • Provide engineering and technical support for identification, analysis, and resolution of problems under the guidance of experienced engineers, with consideration of system and fleet-wide impacts.
  • Apply technical rigor, operating experience, and established methods to support risk-informed solutions that optimize safety, support regulatory compliance, and enhance operational decision-making.
  • Plan, organize, estimate, schedule, and monitor assigned work activities.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities
  • Maintains accurate and detailed records and files
  • Collaborate with and seek guidance from more experienced engineers while sharing knowledge with peers as appropriate.

The incumbent must meet the minimum ANSI requirements for this position identified within the scope of Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011, Confirmation of Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications

Nuclear Engineer III
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience
  • 1 year of nuclear power plant experience
  • A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree


Senior Nuclear Engineer
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer
  • 1 year of nuclear power plant experience
  • A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with the basic systems of a BWR or PWR
  • Master's degree in engineering field of study
  • State registration as a Professional Engineer
  • SRO License, or SRO Certification
  • Working knowledge of nuclear plant design basis, safety-related SSCs, corrective action programs, work management processes, and engineering change processes.
  • Working knowledge of systems and program engineering concepts. Experience with design basis documentation, PM basis development, equipment reliability evaluations, or procurement equivalency evaluations.
  • Working knowledge of probabilistic risk assessment concepts.


Working Conditions
  • Typically, an office environment with some work on site at a Nuclear Power Plant facility
  • The preferred work location for this position is Charlotte, NC. However, the manager may consider another Duke Energy Nuclear plant or corporate office


Special Requirements
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed
  • Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires
  • Occasional overnight travel
