Position Details
Under supervision of the Senior Network Analyst, the network technician performs network software administration for the Compton Unified School District's Network in order to facilitate the exchange of information between locations. Improve data communications system; coordinate and develop standards for connecting personal computers to the operational network; and provides technical assistance to users in regard to the use of network applications systems. This position also establishes and maintains desktop configurations and standards for all computer accessing the district's network; ensures quality of services; and provides technical assistance to user base in regards to district desktop configuration. Incumbents perform network hardware administration and maintenance of the network in order to facilitate the exchange of information between locations and to improve data communications system. Incumbent will also coordinate and assist in the development of standards for network connectivity to the operational network; provides technical assistance to users in regard to district network wiring and connectivity. Also, performs network hardware administration and maintenance.

Essential Functions - Typical Duties

• Primarily performs software administration and security for the Compton Unified School District's network infrastructure.
• Standardize the desktop configurations and supervise the implementation, maintenance, and support by helpdesk personnel.
• Maintains data connectivity equipment and the establishment/troubleshooting of personal computer connectivity to the network infrastructure.
• Duties include but are not limited to: administration of users accounts; user naming conventions; server and work station naming conventions; design and functionality of site servers; e-mail servers and user accounts; backup and restoration processes of user data as required; solve problems related to duties escalated from helpdesk personnel; maintains and upgrades district servers as needed; software licensing and access policy enforcement; monitor server usage to ensure optimal performance; logon scripts and user profile implementation and functionality. In addition, desktop standards and minimum PC configurations; network print functions; assist users with software configurations; troubleshoot difficult and intermittent desktop problems; connectivity troubleshooting; assist with new software roll outs and user transitions/upgrades; meet with user base and clearly communicate changes and fixes; desktop security and maintenance; desktop software licensing and access policy enforcement; monitor service requests to ensure optimal performance. Also, maintains network routers and switch configuration; installs network equipment and patch cables; creates custom data cables; troubleshoot connectivity issues; DHCP, WINS, and TCP/IP configurations; network security maintenance; monitor and enforce equipment software licensing and access policy.
• Evaluate and recommend desktop systems, network components, telecommunications methods, server component, data communication protocols, and other network application system particulars as it relates to the performance of the duties described above.
• Resolves difficult or complex data communications problems through on-site analysis at school district locations and central office.
• Meet and communicate with desktop vendors that provide data communication services and equipment.
• Analyze the capabilities of existing hardware and software and recommend changes and improvements.
• Formulate operational designs of creative and innovative nature for the development, maintenance and improvement of user access and security.
• Repair, install net test and evaluate equipment to ensure maximum Network availability.
• Provide solutions and technical assistance to users for increasing productivity through use of network resources.
• Evaluate new applications to determine their effect on the network; interface with technical and managerial personnel to determine network application systems configuration.
• Prepare and update operations procedure manuals, update operations procedures, and train user regarding changes to the LAN or WAN and desktop configuration.
• Monitor systems to support and control network traffic. Supervise the work of designated persons performing computer installation and repair.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience
Three years experience in the following areas; installing desktop computers in large-scale environments, installing LANs and WANs including experience with TCP/IP. Graduation from an accredited college or university; with a baccalaureate degree in computer science, business administration, electrical engineering, or closely related field of study. Two years of additional experience may be substituted for two years of education.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Class C Driver's License, incumbent is required to use personal vehicle and provide proof of auto insurance, MCSE, CCDA and CCNA encouraged.
