OverviewThis position is responsible for administering, maintaining, monitoring, and troubleshooting enterprise infrastructure that supports mission-critical applications and services. The ideal candidate has experience managing Microsoft Windows Server environments, enterprise networks, cloud and on-premises infrastructure, and a broad range of enterprise technologies in a secure, high-availability environment. This position will support physical and virtual server environments, network infrastructure, enterprise applications, databases, storage systems, security controls, and system integrations.
Responsibilities include infrastructure administration, system monitoring, incident response, vulnerability remediation, configuration management, software deployments, performance optimization, infrastructure upgrades, and technical troubleshooting. The successful candidate will work closely with VA leadership, infrastructure and cybersecurity teams, and third-party vendors to maintain secure, reliable, and high-performing technology solutions that support Veterans and VA mission operations.
Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities
- Administer, maintain, and support Microsoft Windows Server environments, including physical, virtual, cloud, and on-premises infrastructure.
- Design and document system and subsystem configurations, network architectures, interfaces, security controls, disaster recovery strategies, and configuration management requirements.
- Identify infrastructure capacity, performance, scalability, and availability requirements and provide recommendations for optimization.
- Monitor system health, server performance, application availability, and operational status using enterprise monitoring tools, including Dynatrace and Splunk.
- Configure and maintain monitoring dashboards, alerts, and performance metrics to proactively identify and resolve issues.
- Install, configure, and maintain server operating systems, databases, enterprise applications, and supporting infrastructure components.
- Implement infrastructure enhancements, software updates, Microsoft security patches, and server/database changes.
- Perform system administration for Active Directory, including user accounts, security groups, distribution groups, and access management.
- Install, manage, renew, and monitor server certificates and encryption services.
- Support integration between enterprise applications, cloud platforms, mainframe systems, and other interconnected technologies.
- Troubleshoot infrastructure, server, network, and application issues; perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Conduct automated, static, and dynamic security testing and support vulnerability remediation activities.
- Manage server storage, file systems, backups, and disaster recovery capabilities.
- Support performance, stress, and load testing activities to validate system stability and scalability.
- Follow established Change Management and Configuration Management processes, prepare change requests, coordinate implementation activities, and document all environment and platform changes.
- Provide technical analysis, architecture guidance, and subject matter expertise to support system design, modernization, and operational improvements.
- Collaborate with VA stakeholders, cybersecurity teams, infrastructure engineers, application developers, and third-party vendors to support secure, reliable, and high-performing enterprise systems.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered.
- Eight (8) to fifteen (15) years of progressively responsible experience administering and supporting enterprise Windows server infrastructure, systems administration, and IT operations.
- Experience administering Microsoft Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, virtualization, enterprise storage, cloud and on-premises infrastructure, and server performance optimization.
- Experience supporting enterprise network and server operations, including system monitoring, incident response, vulnerability remediation, security patching, change management, and configuration management.
- Experience using enterprise monitoring and diagnostic tools (such as Dynatrace, Splunk, or similar platforms) to monitor system health, analyze performance, troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues, and support high-availability production environments.
- Experience working as a federal contractor or employee.
- Experience working as a consultant, with an understanding of how to effectively manage and support government clients and stakeholders.
- Experience with Jira or a comparable Agile requirements/development management tool.
- Ability to schedule, organize, and facilitate executive-level virtual meetings and summarize outcomes.
- Ability to self-organize, balance workload, complete tasks on time (without reminders), proactively seek out assignments, and offer improvements to client delivery.

Physical Demands
- Ability to effectively communicate in English, including talking and hearing.
- Ability to operate productively in a fully remote work environment, including the ability to take meetings and phone calls from a quiet and private space during business hours.
- Ability and willingness to actively participate in virtual meetings throughout most of the workday and be responsive to messages (MS Teams) and emails (MS Outlook) within reasonable timeframes set by the supervisor or client.
- Ability to be responsive and working during Eastern time zone standard business hours (8:00am to 4:00pm EST).
- Ability to satisfy security clearance and onboarding requirements:
- Print, sign, scan, and return onboarding documentation.
- Travel at personal expense to nearest government facility to get fingerprinted, apply for a PIV badge, pick-up the PIV badge, and pick-up government equipment.
