Job Description

Stantec is seeking an experienced Mine Technical Services Manager for a Western US (based in one of our many Western US offices) position. Our offices are uniquely situated with a strong team of mining professionals and great growth potential. This position requires an individual with broad mining experience; a combination of operations, engineering, consulting and corporate experience; as well as proven technical competencies. Our projects are focused on many different commodities including base and precious metals, rare earth elements, and industrial minerals, in all phases of the mining life cycle, from exploration through post-closure.

The successful candidate will:
  • Be responsible for leading the North American resource geology, mining (open pit and underground), advisory services, and mineral processing teams, providing technical and economic solutions related to energy, mining, mineral processing, technical due diligence, and financial analysis.
  • Possess a passion for leading and developing high performing teams, serving as a technical lead on multi-disciplinary mining projects, and supporting business development functions of existing and new clients working closely with sector leaders.
  • Interact internally throughout the organization and externally with clients and members of business and professional organizations.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, develop, and direct a team of professionals (mining engineers, geologists, economists, and designers) in the planning and execution of project work from high level studies through full execution. Lead the preparation of technical reports from Order-of-Magnitude / Preliminary Economic Assessments to Definitive Feasibility Studies.
  • Engage in business development with a focus on external relationships and key clients.
  • Contribute to an innovative and collaborative work environment where creativity and performance are valued and encouraged.
  • Regularly interface with clients on project technical issues.
  • Serve as a program manager, account manager, and/or project sponsor on key accounts and projects.
  • Drive the scope definition and execution planning for each project, working with a multi-disciplinary team to translate the client's objectives and study definition guidelines into an actionable, controllable scope of work and plan of execution.
  • Enhance existing study management processes and procedures, including risk and value management, option identification/evaluation/selection, and assurance activities.
  • Serve as a technical peer reviewer and/or Qualified Person in the execution of the technical components of the work.
  • Assist the client with crafting the story of their studies, including engagement with other client stakeholders to present the progress and/or outcomes.
  • Understand and implement various stage gate study standard processes.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control on their own projects and projects of peers.
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff members and support hiring new talents.
  • Some domestic and international travel is required.

  • Risk management, commercial awareness, business analysis & reporting, and operational/business knowledge.
  • Diverse background in the full life-cycle of mining projects.
  • Ability to sign off as competent person for NI43-101, JORC and SEC SK-1300 reserves & resources reporting
  • Influential leader, capable of weighing contradicting priorities and securing buy-in.
  • Ability to effectively liaise with external and internal stakeholders from multiple cultures.
  • Comfort in managing a complex environment with a virtual team based around the world.
  • High degree of leadership, planning, teamwork, decision-making, judgment, and problem-solving skills.
  • Understanding of contracts and engineering delivery methods and various pricing structures for projects.
  • An existing and well-established network in the mining industry.
  • Exceptional organizational, technical, leadership, written and oral communication, attention to detail, and strong QA/QC skills.
  • Demonstration of innovation of the mining process for past projects or roles
  • An aptitude for steering multi-disciplinary teams towards a common objective.
  • Willingness to travel to client sites or other Stantec offices (~10% travel).
  • Be a driver of a positive work environment.
  • Valid driver's license.

Education and Experience
  • Minimum of an B.S. in Mining Engineering or related field from an accredited university.
  • A Master of Business Administration degree, while not necessary, is viewed as an asset.
  • A minimum of 20 years of relevant study/project and/or program management experience.
  • Direct study experience in the mining and or heavy industry sectors is required.
  • Existing professional registration is preferred or ability to pursue during the first year of employment (PE, PG, and/or QP).
