Full Job Description
Summary:

The Microbiologist III is a senior-level position responsible for overseeing complex microbiological testing, research, and analysis. This role involves leading scientific projects, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and developing new methodologies. The Microbiologist III also provides advanced technical expertise, mentors junior staff, and serves as a subject matter expert in the microbiology laboratory.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

  • Coordination of technical reviews and workplan markup for domestic partner engagement and technical assistance.
  • Advise on bacteriology procedures and workflows directed at detection, isolation, identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and additional phenotypic and molecular characterization and classification or emerging antimicrobial resistance, particularly among carbapenem-resistant organisms.
  • Issues management and coordination of technical support for OLSA various unit needs.
  • Provide support and manages projects in program management models and software.
  • Participate in routine team and project meetings focused on domestic and global testing activities.
  • Develop, revise and review project protocols and documents according to CEMB QMS guidelines.
  • Perform data analyses, prepare reports, and deliver presentations to stakeholders.
  • Lead or contribute significantly to the design and implementation of laboratory research studies with internal and external partners.
  • Remotely assist partners with troubleshooting non-conforming events and performing root-cause analyses.
  • Conduct or support site visits to educate partnering laboratory personnel on isolate testing protocols, data reporting, and data use as it relates to meeting project goals.
  • Assist with drafting and review of outgoing guidance documents and workflows, based on information gathered through methods reviews.
  • Attend routine team and project meetings focused on testing activities.
  • Prepare summaries, reports, and slide decks to update internal and external partners on ongoing and planned activities.
Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to work across multiple teams and multiple projects at the same time. Adaptable to changing priorities and time zones.
  • Cultural sensitivity when working with partners from low- and middle-income countries.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of microbiological techniques and procedures, including aseptic technique, culturing, and identification of microorganisms.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Foundational understanding of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, stewardship principles, and the AR threat landscape; familiarity with key pathogens (e.g., ESKAPE organisms, MDR/XDR/PDR classifications) and relevant treatment guidelines; awareness of CDC, WHO, and federal AR action plans (e.g., National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria)
  • Ability to lead or contribute significantly to the design and implementation of laboratory research studies with internal and external partners
  • Confidently able to assist partners with troubleshooting laboratory testing protocols, data reporting, and data use

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5-7 years of relevant microbiology laboratory experience, with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • MS or MPH preferred minimum degree
  • Expertise in advanced microbiological techniques, including molecular biology methods, microbial identification, and culture techniques.
  • Background in infectious disease, clinical microbiology, or public health is a strong differentiator; awareness of advanced clinical bacteriology procedures directed at antimicrobial susceptibility testing is key, though position does not routinely do “wet-lab work”
  • Experience in method development and validation.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment with exposure to biohazards.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and handle small, delicate equipment.
  • Internship, fellowship, or research experience in infectious disease or clinical microbiology
  • Exposure to hospital, pharmacy, clinical microbiology, or public health programs
  • Familiarity with real-world evidence, epidemiological data, or health outcomes research
  • 3 years of clinical lab or public health lab microbiology/bacteriology experience should be a must-have and candidates with MLS(ASCP), M(ASCP) or SM(ASCP) on top of that would be highly favored.

 

Pay and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $95,000.00 - $100,000.00 annually.
