Position Scope/Summary:The Manufacturing Engineer II plays a critical role in optimizing tube mill operations through technical expertise, process innovation, and continuous improvement. This position leads investigations into manufacturing and customer-related challenges, designs and executes experiments, analyzes data, and implements effective solutions that improve product quality, operational efficiency, and overall performance. Serving as a central technical resource, the Manufacturing Engineer II partners with production, quality, maintenance, and leadership teams to drive sustainable improvements and support business objectives.
Position Requirements:- Provide diversified range of technical services to both internal and external customers supporting the attainment of Company goals. Areas of support include process development, metallurgical testing, cold drawing, heat treating, nondestructive testing, and failure analysis of metal tubes.
- Responsible for making proper and timely disposition of nonconforming metallic materials, including but not limited to NCR and customer complaints.
- Write and perform installation and operational qualifications (IQ and OQ) for new equipment and/or processes. Support the development and execution of master validation plans and product/process validations (PQ).
- Provide leadership to less experienced associates.
- Research, plan, and execute actions to solve complex problems. Lead the application of SPC, six sigma and lean principles, statistical methods, and design of experiments to identify and eliminate process inefficiencies and nonconformances.
- Use good project planning principles to develop task completion dates for equipment installation, cost saving opportunities, and process improvements and then execute to that plan.
- Recognize, communicate, and measure technical risk for a variety of metals for use in medical, aerospace, and industrial products and the processes and equipment used to manufacture them. Develop and implement innovative solutions that support business goals.
- Use interactions with internal and external customers to anticipate problems and implement process/product improvements.
Environmental Working Conditions:- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Qualifications:- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science with 3+ years of experience. Other engineering degrees with relevant metals processing experience will be considered.
- Ability to communicate (both written and oral) complex topics to persons not familiar with the subject matter.
- Ability to work and be hands-on in a manufacturing environment.
- Six Sigma certification is desired but not required with demonstrated experience in problem solving, statistics, and design of experiments.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Minitab statistical software. Ability to perform basic 3D modeling and drafting in support of process improvements (Solidworks preferred).
- Experience with metal forming, cleaning, and heat-treating operations is a differentiator.
The associate must successfully complete the general RCRA Awareness training through the onboarding training process upon their start at Viant followed by an annual refresher. If the associate changes their position or begins to handle larger quantities of chemical waste (Above 20 gals) at a time, additional training will be required.
