Starting Salary: $142,500-167,500/annum

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a Metals Supervisor to join our Maintenance team at the Burnaby Refinery. This key leadership role is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable execution of maintenance activities related to fixed equipment and metals work, including welding, pressure equipment, and piping systems. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with fellow supervisors, planners, schedulers, contractors, and the Fixed Equipment Integrity Team to ensure high standards in asset integrity, team development, and operational excellence while stewarding the Routine Workflow Process.

Responsibilities:

Safety & Reliability Leadership
  • Lead by example to foster a strong safety culture through visible, active participation in safety programs (Loss Prevention, Human Performance, IIP, and OE principles).
  • Champion the use of Safety Loss Analysis in the field and coach teams on safe work practices.
  • Conduct Job Safety Analyses and lead daily toolbox meetings, including fit-for-duty assessments.
  • Facilitate monthly safety meetings, ensuring action items are completed and progress is communicated.
  • Maintain strong field presence to ensure safe execution of maintenance work.
  • Manage incident investigations within your area of accountability and ensure lessons learned are shared and applied.
  • Ensure proper reporting, documentation, and follow-up of injuries, incidents, and near-misses.

Team & Work Management
  • Supervise metals trades personnel (e.g., welders, pipefitters) and QA/QC Technician(s), along with contractors as required.
  • Coordinate and prioritize daily maintenance tasks and manage emergent work effectively.
  • Ensure worker safety, productivity, and quality through active field presence and oversight.
  • Support team development through coaching, mentoring, and formal performance reviews.
  • Support and build an inclusive work culture by fostering a respectful, collaborative, and positive environment.
  • Participate in turnaround and project planning, including resource forecasting and coordination.
  • Develop and maintain recruitment, training, and development plans to support long-term team capability.
  • Administer the collective bargaining agreement, including overtime allocation, vacation scheduling, and shift changes.
  • Respond to grievances and support progressive discipline processes.
  • Partner with Human Resources (HR) and Occupational Health on attendance management and return-to-work programs.
  • Provide relief coverage for the Rotating Equipment Supervisor

Maintenance & Reliability Stewardship
  • Collaborate with Reliability, Planning, and Operations teams to reduce downtime and resolve chronic equipment issues.
  • Provide input to the maintenance plan and adjust priorities as needed.
  • Contribute to long-term maintenance strategies that enhance refinery performance.
  • Collaborate with Fixed Equipment Integrity, Reliability, Planning, and Operations teams to maintain asset integrity and resolve equipment issues.
  • Participate in daily prioritization and weekly scheduling processes, ensuring work is planned and ready for execution.
  • Own execution of scheduled work and support schedule adherence and improvements.
  • Review completed work for quality and ensure proper work order closeout.
  • Steward repairable processes and ensure proper handling of materials and equipment.
  • Coordinate external vendors, OEMs, and contractors to support maintenance execution.
  • Support turnaround and project activities, including planning and resource coordination.

Administrative & Financial Oversight
  • Assist in managing the Routine Maintenance Budget, ensuring effective use of overtime and resources.
  • Approve timesheets, purchase orders, invoices, and inventory transactions in alignment with budget and operational needs.
  • Assist in managing routine maintenance budgets and resource allocation.
  • Ensure all compliance-related tasks are completed on time, including CAP items and ZERO metrics.
  • Maintain up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensure accessibility.
  • Verify welding certifications and adherence to approved welding procedures.
  • Support completion of regulatory inspections and requirements (ITRs, TLRs, PSVs).

Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Metals-related maintenance (welding, piping, pressure equipment) in a refinery or heavy industrial environment.
  • Proven leadership or supervisory experience in a unionized work environment.
  • Relevant trade certification, Inspections, or Engineering Degree (e.g., Welding, Pipefitting) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of fixed equipment integrity, welding practices, and applicable codes/standards.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).

Preferred
  • Experience in a petrochemical or refining environment.
  • Familiarity with SAP or similar enterprise systems.
  • Experience supporting turnarounds and major maintenance events.
  • Background in QA/QC processes and inspection programs.
  • Experience developing and delivering technical training or workforce development programs.
