Full Job Description
Under the supervision of Diagnostic Radiology Chief Physicist/Manager/Director of Yale New Haven Hospital and Health System, medical physicist II shall provide comprehensive medical physics services in a wide range of imaging modalities: implementation of quality control and accreditation programs, assist in evaluation of new imaging modalities under consideration by the institution, perform tasks and address issues related to acceptance testing, quality assurance, regulatory standards, accreditation, investigational clinical research and participate in educational training programs supported by the department as needed. The appropriate clinical implementation of these complex technologies requires the expertise of a board-certified diagnostic radiology physicist who will assist with implementing and enforcing the YNHH image optimization and quality management program in compliance with all state, federal and institutional requirements.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Oversees the diagnostic quality assurance programs for medical imaging in Diagnostic Radiology at YNHH to ensure the highest image quality and to minimize patient doses associated with imaging processes. 1.1 Conducts, supervises and/or reviews annual QA testing of all diagnostic x-ray equipment to ensure compliance with imaging and dosimetric standards. 1.2 Performs and/or supervises acceptance tests of all newly installed equipment to ensure their proper function and adherence to applicable Federal, State and industry standards. 1.3 Assists with the development and ongoing review of imaging protocols to ensure patient doses are kept as low as possible while maintaining optimal clinical image quality. 1.4 Investigates overexposures, accidents, spills, losses, thefts, unauthorized receipts, uses, transfers, disposal, misadministrations, and other deviations from approved radiation safety practice. Assists section management with creating and implementing corrective action plans as necessary.
  • 2. Assists professional and technical staff on selection, location and implementation of new imaging equipment. 2.1 Participates in the evaluation of new imaging modalities and advises professional and technical staff on the selection and implementation of these advances into the Hospital's services. 2.2 Ensures that professional and technical staff correctly utilizes protective equipment and techniques to minimize occupational, patient and public dose. 2.3 Ensures that professional and technical staff correctly utilizes imaging equipment to optimize clinical image quality.
  • 3. Assists in the training of professional, technical and resident staff in the sciences of diagnostic imaging and the minimization of patient and occupational doses. 3.1 Assists with training seminars to educate professional, technical, and resident staff in imaging physics and radiation safety practices. 3.2 Assists and educates technical staff to implement individualized technique protocols to optimize imaging and minimize dose.
  • 4. Performs dosimetric calculations for clinical and human research purposes. 4.1 Assists researchers in quantifying the doses from imaging studies so the HIC and RSC can determine their compliance with FDA limits. 4.2 Maintains a dosimetry database so patient doses can be calculated whenever a clinical need exists. 4.3 Performs fetal dose estimates whenever a clinical need is identified.
  • 5. Ensures effective and accurate communication of diagnostic physics and safety information to administration, staff, patients, family and the public. 5.1 Counsels patients and family members, as needed, about radiological issues associated with diagnostic imaging. 5.2 Assists in the production of patient and staff educational documents to ensure they are adequately informed about radiological issues. .
  • 6. Designs, evaluates and certifies the shielding of diagnostic facilities to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements. 6.1 Uses NCRP guidance in specifying shielding requirements for new or renovated facilities. 6.2 Inspects shielding installation to ensure it is done according to the specifications. 6.3 Measures radiation leakage to ensure the facility shielding meets federal, state and local requirements.
  • 7. Assists in the implementation of new digital imaging technologies into the information technologies available at YNHH. 7.1 Ensures electronic displays are calibrated properly to optimize image display. 7.2 Ensure that the Hospital systems remain compliant with Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standards.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Ph.D. or M.S. in medical physics or related specialty. Board certified in diagnostic radiologic physics by the American Board of Radiology or, in diagnostic imaging physics by the American Board of Medical Physics.

EXPERIENCE

Should have more than 7 years of recent continuous full-time experience in clinical diagnostic imaging physics.

LICENSURE

Certified in diagnostic medical physics by the American Board of Radiology or American Board of Medical Physics.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques of medical imaging, medical physics and dosimetry. Ability to apply the concepts of all of the above to the diagnostic imaging process and to communicate these concepts to the diagnostic radiologists and technical staff for implementation. Mathematical and computer skills for imaging science including data management and picture archiving systems. A thorough knowledge of human anatomy as related to clinical diagnostic imaging. Ability to interpret and execute relevant in-house and national imaging protocols. Knowledge of radiation safety and the rules and regulations of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and State Department of Health. Knowledge of the department's imaging equipment and software programs for imaging and archiving. Knowledge of departmental/organizational policies and procedures. Interpersonal communication skills. Organizational skills. Teaching skills. Advanced computer skills. Demonstrate ability to supervise junior staff and mentor residents.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

should be able to work with test objects and occasionally lift 10-20 lb test objects from floor to table level. will work with ionizing radiation and follows protection of patient and staff requirements, expected to work at different site and delivery networks of YNHHS, expected to travel between those sites.
