Title: Surgical Services Manager - RN
Department: Nursing - Surgical Services
Status: Full Time Position. Requires weekend and holiday rotation.
Hours: Primarily Day Shift. Hours may be adjusted in response to workload demands. Low census may be utilized in accordance with hospital policy.
Job summary:Manages and coordinates the clinical and other activities in the Surgical Services Department; is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of patients in her/his department during a given period of time; is responsible for the direction and supervision of personnel assigned to her/him. Under the direction of the Director of Nursing Services, the Surgical Services Manager is responsible for planning, organizing and supervising the nursing care administered within his/her assigned shift; to meet patient care needs, and provide clients and physicians optimal service in a cost effective manner.
Qualifications/Position Requirements:- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
- Current Michigan Board of Nursing license as a Registered Nurse with required renewals
- Previous experience in nursing leadership/supervision required.
- A minimum of 1+ years of supervisory experience such as charge nurse, relief charge nurse, supervisor, relief supervisor or head nurse is desirable.
- Knowledge of current trends and techniques in nursing.
- BLS Certification required within 3 months of hire and recertification as required
- ACLS, required within 1 year of hire and recertification as required
- Basic Arrhythmia Course required.
- 1-2 years Surgical nursing experience (Pre-Op, Post-Op, Endoscopy, Operative and Ambulatory case), required.
- Knowledge of outpatient infusions/injections.
- Knowledge of principals and practice of surgical asepsis as it applies to the surgical room as well as proper handling of tissue specimens, cultures and smears.
- Knowledge of various steps of different operations to be able to anticipate surgeons' needs.
- Good understanding of various instruments used for each type of operation and proper setup of surgical room.
- Thorough knowledge of post anesthesia recovery care and endoscopy procedures.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships and effective communication with peers, patients, families, physicians and all other support hospital & external personnel
- Ability to function in a leadership position by serving as a resource person and assuming leadership role in emergency/crisis situation, delegating specific tasks to appropriately trained personnel.
- Supports and contributes to the total hospital system by maintaining a hospital-wide perspective and serving on department/hospital committees.
- Influence the direction of professional nursing practice by maintaining a positive perspective/attitude.
- Demonstrates leadership and technical skills essential to job.
- Demonstrates ability to handle multiple tasks in a stressful situation while maintaining composure and excellence in the delivery of nursing services.
