HDR is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our Michigan-based Power Generation team. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be joining a highly capable, multi-discipline team that supports power and energy projects primarily within the utility, IPP, industrial, institutional, and municipal sectors.
Preferred candidates will have a working knowledge of industrial- and utility-scale power generation systems as required to carry out the typical job duties which include: mechanical equipment/pipe sizing; equipment/piping layout considerations; construction document development (P&IDs, system layout/installation drawings and specifications); engineer/equipment vendor submittal reviews, vendor/contractor communications; technical writing (reports, procurement specifications, etc.); code reviews; site visits; project planning; and working within an assigned budget and schedule. Significant experience with the design and specification of power generation fluid systems including steam, condensate, fuel gas, cooling water, compressed air, and similar systems is preferred. Experience with utilization of software for detailed fluid analysis or modeling is a plus.
The candidate will be encouraged and trained to develop from a mechanical or lead engineer to a project engineer and ultimately into a project manager or engineering manager. Most tasks will be done in a collaborative manner involving engineers and designers from several other disciplines. The candidate will be expected to share the benefits of his or her experience with others, including the mentoring of younger engineers. Communication and leadership skills as required to direct a small team of engineers and designers are also desired.
The position will require travel for site surveys, technical conferences, client meetings and monitoring of construction. Travel is typically less than 10%.

- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Previous experience in mechanical system design of commercial or institutional buildings
- Requires professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered. Example: Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
- Experience in commercial or institutional facilities
- Computer experience using MS Office, Trane TRACE or similar software, manufacturer selection software
- Previous experience with an architectural/engineering or engineering consulting firm
